The Federal Government has issued a new set of directives in its bid to
\naccelerate the implementation of the Buhari administration\u2019s new vision
\nfor the development of the Niger Delta.<\/p>\n
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, issued the directives at a recent
\nmeeting of the inter-ministerial working group following up on the renewed
\nNiger Delta interactive engagements of the Buhari administration.<\/p>\n
For instance, the Federal Government has given all contractors including
\nthose handling Niger Delta Development Commission projects in the region a
\n30-day ultimatum from today to return to site or face prosecution.<\/p>\n
The Federal Government has also specifically directed that the list of all
\ncontractors who have not returned to site within the stipulated period be
\ncompiled and submitted to the Ministry of Justice and the Economic &
\nFinancial Crimes Commission for investigation and prosecution.<\/p>\n
A concerted implementation work plan that would respond to the
\ndevelopmental issues and projects proposed by PANDEF is also being
\nprepared, while fresh mandates are also being issued to all the relevant
\nMDAs as appropriate.<\/p>\n
This includes the FG\u2019s directive to the Ministry of Petroleum Resources,
\nthe Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the Ministries of Niger
\nDelta Affairs; Environment; Power, Works and Housing to proceed with the
\ndesign and implementation of work plans in line with the administration\u2019s
\nnew vision for the region.<\/p>\n
Ministries and agencies of government involved in furthering the
\nestablishment of the Maritime University at Okerenkoko in Gbaramatu
\nKingdom, Delta state, have also been directed to come up with a clear path
\nto the eventual actualisation of the objective including consideration for
\na possible and timely take-off grant for the university.<\/p>\n
The meeting also discussed the plans to continue presidential visits to
\nthe remaining States with oil-producing communities so as to effectively
\nconclude the interactive engagements with the people of the region.<\/p>\n
Specific instructions have also been given to the Ministry of Environment
\nto ensure and report on the progress of the Ogoni Clean-up, for which a
\nProject Office is now located in Rivers State and is functional.<\/p>\n
A directive has also been issued to the Ministry of Environment for a plan
\nto commence considerations for the clean-up of other polluted areas in the
\noil-producing communities.<\/p>\n
The membership of the Niger Delta inter-ministerial group comprises
\nofficials from the Presidency, all relevant ministries including the
\nPetroleum Resources, Niger Delta Affairs, Environment, Power, Works and
