Nigeria\u2019s president Muhammadu Buhari must reveal the true state of his
\nhealth to his people, Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka said in Paris on Sunday<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Buhari spent nearly two months in Britain on medical leave. After he
\nreturned to the country, the 74-year old president acknowledged that he
\nwas terribly and that he received blood transfusions in London.<\/p>\n

But he never really mentioned specifically what ailed him. Soyinka said
\nthat was not good enough and emphasised the need for the president and
\nother Nigerian public office holders, to be honest with their health
\nstatus.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s ill, there\u2019s no question, and I wish for heaven\u2019s sake that people
\nin public positions would just be honest,\u201d Soyinka said.
\n\u201cIllness is part of our existence. Buhari owes it to the nation and I
\ndon\u2019t know why he and his advisors are being so coy about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In January, the Nobel-winning author gave his tacit backing to Buhari\u2019s
\nquest to reposition country\u2019s fortune, noting that he was not surprised
\nthat the president\u2019s actions have made him less popular among the people.<\/p>\n

According to him, \u201cNigeria was sinking\u201d when Buhari took over power, a
\nsituation which made cleaning the \u201cmess\u201d of past regimes a difficult task.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing surprising to me about his losing popularity, it should
\nbe expected,\u201d said Soyinka, who was a fierce critic of Buhari\u2019s earlier
\nterm as head of state after taking power in a coup in 1983.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople wanted change, that word was not just a slogan, it was a promise,\u201d
\nSoyinka told AFP in Johannesburg in January.<\/p>\n

\u201cFulfilling political promises when you take over the reins of power and
\nyou have to clean up a lot of mess, it\u2019s not easy.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
