National Institute for Nigerian Languages, NINLAN, Aba, Abia State, has
\nstated that the institute is being frustrated from fulfilling its mandate
\nof mass producing teachers of Nigerian languages by the National
\nUniversities Commission, NUC.<\/p>\n
Speaking to journalists at the Institute\u2019s permanent site, Ovom, Aba,
\nNINLAN\u2019s Acting Executive Director, Prof. Obiajulu Emejulu, stated that
\nNINLAN was set up in 1993 as a degree awarding institution, but the NUC
\nhas failed to allow the institute to run degree programmes.<\/p>\n
He said; \u201cNINLAN was set up as a degree awarding institution from
\ninception in 1993. Unfortunately, the NUC for various reasons which we
\nconsider political,\u00a0 has never allowed this institute to start running
\nDegree programmes.\u00a0 We have gone through six Executive Secretaries of NUC,
\nand the problem has remained the same. They always give one excuse or the
\nother. At one time, they said Institutes doesn\u2019t award degrees. We said
\nno, that such is laughable, because all over the world there are lots of
\ninstitutes who award degrees.\u00a0 What the Act that established you stipulate
\nis what you do.<\/p>\n
\u201cRecently, they said the academic body that runs the institution is named
\nAcademic Board and not Senate. They said Senate are the ones who award
\ndegrees, but we said it was not true because NINLAN was set up to award
\ndegrees and that the body was named Academic board isn\u2019t a problem.
\nMeanwhile in Nigeria, we have the Police Institute in Kano, now awarding
\ndegrees, the Army has NDA and it awards degrees. When we brought this, the
\nNUC stopped talking about it, now we have submitted proposal to the
\nNational Assembly to change our Academic Board to Senate if that will
\nhelp.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe current NUC said we should go for affiliation with the University of
\nUyo. An institution that already has a law to run degree programmes is now
\ngoing for affiliation? But because we have waited for 23 years, we are
\ntired; we want something to start happening here, we are also pursuing the
\naffiliation option to UNIUYO.<\/p>\n
“We are ready to do anything that can be done to bring degree students
\nhere. Students hardly come here because they find it difficult to move to
\ndegree programmes after Diploma. The day the degree students come here,
\nthat NINLAN is born anew. Our diploma programmes will become vibrant and
