Sule Lamido, former governor of Jigawa state, has described the
\nanti-corruption war of President Muhammadu Buhari as a ruse.<\/p>\n
Speaking in an interview with the Hausa service of the BBC, Lamido
\nwondered how a man who worked under Sani Abacha, the late military
\ndictator, could be talking about fighting corruption.<\/p>\n
Abacha had appointed Buhari as chairman of the then Petroleum Trust Fund
\n(PTF).<\/p>\n
\u201cHe (Buhari) worked under Abacha; in fact he was the closest to the late
\nmilitary ruler and when it comes to corruption, everybody knows where
\nAbacha\u2019s government stands,\u201d Lamido said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBuhari is just making noise; there\u2019s no iota of truth in the so-called
\ncommitment to the improvement of security and halting graft in the
\ncountry.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lamido also faulted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)
\nfor its refusal to disclose the owners of the monies recovered in an
\napartment in Ikoyi, Lagos.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s unthinkable to say that the EFCC had discovered huge monies in a
\nbuilding in Lagos but could not track the real owner; who leaked the
\nstory? Who did the source say is the owner of the find?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose in position of authority should always have the courage to tell the
\nled the truth because leadership is sacred.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lamido\u2019s criticisms of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government
\nstarted before the ruling party formed government at the center.<\/p>\n
Two months before the election that ended the 16-year reign of the Peoples
\nDemocratic Party (PDP), he said the country was too big for the APC to
\ngovern.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you go through the social media, what they \u200epaint is that APC has won
\nalmost 99 percent in Nigeria,\u201d he had said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is APC? An amalgamation of pain, anger and desperation. And this
\ncountry is too big for them.\u201d<\/p>\n
In July 210 5, Lamido and his sons spent four days in Kano prison after
\nbeing arrested by the EFCC.<\/p>\n
They were arraigned on a 28-count charge of corruption and money
\nlaundering. The commission accused them of siphoning billions of naira
\nbelonging to the state government.<\/p>\n
When he regained freedom, Lamido said only those detained with him would
\nunderstand what he and his children went through.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople hate me because I am outspoken,\u201d he had said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is difficult to share my prison with anyone because it\u2019s not like
\nhunger or something tangible. You have to be in there to feel what I and
\nmy children went through.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not new to detention, it\u2019s all part of struggle for life. If the
\npurpose is to humiliate, well that\u2019s part of the hazard of occupying
