…Declares NCC \u201can Island of Excellence in Public Service\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The President of TELL Communications Limited – publishers of Tell
\nnewsmagazine and Broad Street Journal \u2013 Mr. Nosa Igiebor, yesterday led a
\nteam of top management staff of the organization on a visit to the
\nNigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to convey the nomination of the
\nExecutive Vice Chairman\/CEO of NCC, Professor Umar Garba Danbatta as the
\nCEO OF THE YEAR 2016.<\/p>\n

Mr. Igiebor, MD\/CEO OF Tell Communications told Professor Danbatta, that
\nhe was greatly pleased to be at the NCC \u201ca public sector organization with
\nan uncommon excellent culture of public service\u201d. \u201cThere was a massive
\nresponse when we called for nominations, the choice narrowed down to the
\nCEOs of NCC, BOI and NNPC but ultimately NCC emerged topmost, though the
\nvotes were quite close\u201d Mr. Igiebor narrated as his revelation was greeted
\nwith a loud applause.<\/p>\n

Igiebor stated that TELL had devoted its entire history to publishing,
\nchampioning issues of freedom and advocating good governance as a
\nspringboard to national development, but the TELL AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE is
\ninstituted to celebrate organizations and persons inhabiting \u201cthe island
\nof excellence where NCC stood out preeminently in the public service\u201d. In
\nthe course of this exercise, Mr. Igiebor said his organization interacted
\nwith the public extensively and found that some members of the public
\nsphere did not even realize that NCC is a public sector organization –
\nbecause of its performance.<\/p>\n

He said although public complaints about services rendered by telecoms
\ncompanies persists, NCC has performed creditably well in reining in the
\nmalfeasance through its distinctive regulatory role and continuity of
\nfocus and actions by successive leadership of the Commission. \u201cWe have the
\nhonour on behalf of the Board of TELL Awards for Excellence to convey the
\ndecision of the nomination of Professor Danbatta as the CEO of the Year
\n2016 because he has raised the bar in excellent public service and we pray
\nhe sustains the trend and that his successors continue on that path\u201d Mr.
\nIgiebor declared.<\/p>\n

Responding, Prof. Danbatta thanked the TELL team for the visit to NCC and
\nacknowledged the recognition on behalf of Management and staff, describing
\nthe honour as historically significant because he had always seen TELL as
\na highly respected, greatly analytical and not sensational media, adding
\nthat TELL is indeed fitting in the category of The Economist, Newsweek and
\nother magazines of that genre.<\/p>\n

Prof. Danbatta told his visitors that this is the first time the
\nCommission will have no hesitation receiving an award from a media
\norganization because TELL is a reputable medium. \u201cComing from the academia
\nwhere we are used to incisive sometimes radical analysis of issues, I
\nparticularly appreciate TELL\u2019s courageous analysis\u201d Professor Danbatta
\nsaid adding that it is that pedigree that has helped him to fit in to a
\nworld class organization like NCC where very noble Nigerians had done
\nspectacular foundational work which his predecessors built upon to put NCC
\non the world map, promising to make NCC better.<\/p>\n

Sounding quite conceptual and philosophical Danbatta said there are issues
\nnaturally \u201cassociated with making things better. This is precisely why we
\nrely on the public to tell us how to make things better and the result is
\nwhat you find in NCC, the real culture of public service to the people is
\nwhat we endeavour to do and that attitude explains why people come from
\ndifferent countries around the world to study what we are doing and how we
\nare doing it in order to benchmark with their works in other
\njurisdictions\u201d.<\/p>\n

Professor Danbatta expressed gratitude to TELL for the honour which he
\nsaid is dedicated to the staff of the Commission who work tirelessly to
\nensure NCC focus on the accomplishment of its mandate. He stated that he
\nwas particularly gratified because the recognition is coming from a
\nleading light of the Fourth Estate of the Realm which aggregates public
\nopinion and speaks for the public describing TELL as \u201can existing and
\nenduring legacy\u201d.<\/p>\n

Professor Danbatta also spoke to the challenges in the telecoms sector. He
\nrecalled theft and vandalism of infrastructure among myriads of challenges
\nfacing the sector and the collaborative partnership which the Commission
\nhas instituted with security agencies and other critical stakeholders to
\naddress these and other challenges. He noted that telecommunication
\ntechnology impacts so much on socioeconomic development of the nation and
\nevery stakeholder\u2019s support is needed to consolidate the strides in the
\ntelecom sector. This explains why Commission has built several
\nconversations and programmes around the challenges of the consumer as
\nclearly articulated in the ongoing 2017: YEAR OF THE NIGERIAN TELECOMS
\nCONSUMER campaigns. Danbatta said the Commission looks forward to working
\nwith TELL magazine to accomplish its enunciated vision for the telecom
\nsector.<\/p>\n

The Award will be formally presented to Professor Danbatta at an event in
