The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says the
\nFederal Government is delivering on its election promises and that only \u201ca
\nfew vocal minority are not seeing what the government is doing.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
The minister stated this when the leadership of the National Association
\nand Nigerian Students (NANS), paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja Tuesday
\nevening.<\/p>\n
Mohammed said \u201cthe administration is on course in the delivery of the
\nthree major electoral promises it made before coming to power. That are:
\nto fight corruption, fight insecurity and fix the economy.<\/p>\n
He said in less than two years, the government had restored peace and
\nterritories that were taken over in the troubled North-East and defeated
\nthe Boko Haram insurgents.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur success in fighting insecurity is there for everybody to see. It is
\nnot just fighting insecurity but consistently restoring peace to every
\npart of Nigeria\u2019\u2019, he said.<\/p>\n
The minister said the administration deserved credit for securing the
\nfreedom of the Chibok school girls so far released by Boko Haram.<\/p>\n
He assured that the government was working toward the release of the
\nremaining girls as well as others in Boko Haram\u2019s captivity.<\/p>\n
In fighting corruption, the minister said government took the bull by the
\nhorns, considering the fact that \u201cit is as deadly as insecurity and has
\ngrave effects on national development.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn our approach, we are not interested in vilifying anybody but more
\ninterested in letting people know how much we are suffering as a result of
\ncorruption perpetrated by only a few opportunists.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the looted moneys were invested and utilised, today we are going to
\nhave railway, our power will not be epileptic, our roads will be better
\nand we will not have highest number of mortality.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have not been selective in the fight against corruption and that is
\nwhy we introduced the whistle blowing policy and I am glad to hear that
\nthe students are prepared to work with us not just to blow whistle but to
\nblow trumpet\u2019\u2019, he said.<\/p>\n
The minister said that government has done a lot in fixing the economy but
\nthe approach is not a quick fix as was done in the past and expected by
\nthe people.<\/p>\n
He said the government was investing massively in infrastructure and in
\ndiversifying the economy from oil.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor many decades we have discovered oil, the country has failed to
\ndevelop other areas to diversify the economy.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe came in and we said we are going to do what no government has ever
\ndone before and ensure that never again will Nigeria be held hostage by
\ncrude oil.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are working to develop other sectors of the economy like agriculture,
\nmanufacturing, mining and the creative industry so that even if oil falls
\nto as low as 10 dollars a barrel, it will not affect us.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are also investing in infrastructure to create the foundation for
\nsustainable economic growth\u2019\u2019, he said.<\/p>\n
The minister noted that there was no gain without pain and the hardship
\nthe people were going through was temporary.<\/p>\n
He said the national re-orientation campaign \u201cChange Begins with Me\u2019\u2019 was
\nthe greatest legacy of the administration and he was glad that the
\nstudents were prepared to partner with government to take the campaign to
\nschools.<\/p>\n
National President of NANS, Haruna Kadiri commended the government for its
\nefforts in addressing insecurity and ensuring the release of abducted
\nChibok girls.<\/p>\n
Kadiri also commended the government\u2019s anti-corruption policy and approach
\nand prayed for quick recovery of the President and his safe return to
\ncontinue the good work.<\/p>\n
He said the association was ready to work with government in taking the
\nChange Begins with Me national reorientation campaign to campuses,
