Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has condemned the Department
\nof State Services (DSS) arrest and detention of the Managing Director
\nof Capital Oil and Gas Limited, Ifeanyi Ubah, lamenting that \u201cthe DSS
\nis becoming law unto itself and dragging Nigeria back to 1984 when
\nDecree 2 was used by the National Security Organisation (NSO) to dump
\nNigerians in detention without trial under flimsy excuses.\u201d<\/p>\n
The governor, who described the DSS claim that it arrested and
\ndetained Ubah for inciting members of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers
\nUnion to stop lifting petroleum products so as to cripple the economy
\nand cause untold hardship to Nigerians as \u201cnonsensical\u201d, added that;
\n\u201cIt is becoming obvious that if nothing is done to curb the
\nlawlessness of the DSS, the agency will singlehandedly truncate
\ndemocracy in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday, by his Special
\nAssistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka,
\nGovernor Fayose said arresting and detaining Ifeanyi Ubah for economic
\nsabotage was a sad reminder of the President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s
\nmilitary regime.<\/p>\n
He said under the State Security Act CAP. N 74 LFN, 2004, the
\nresponsibility of the DSS is majorly the prevention and detection
\nwithin Nigeria of any crime against the internal security of Nigeria
\nand the protection and preservation of all non-military classified
\nmatters concerning the internal security of Nigeria, noting that the
\nservice has abandoned its core duties.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf Ubah is being held for allegedly inciting members of the Petroleum
\nTanker Drivers Union to stop lifting petroleum products, one day and
\nvery soon too, members of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas
\nWorkers (NUPENG) and Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff
\nAssociation of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) will be sent to jail for going on
\nstrike to agitate for their welfare,\u201d the governor said.<\/p>\n
Governor Fayose, who said Nigerians did not vote for change to be
\nhounded by the DSS as it is being done since the emergence of this All
\nProgressives Congress (APC) government, noted that; \u201cThat\u2019s the same
\nway the DSS arrested the former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel
\nSuswan in February and detained him until two days ago, claiming that
\nhe constituted security risk and failed to cooperate with
\ninvestigators.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe other time too, this same DSS claimed that it uncovered plot by
\nthe Rivers State Governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike to disrupt governance in
\nstrategic federal government agencies and one can begin to imagine if
\nthe DSS won\u2019t one day accuse whoever that is perceived as opposing the
\nAPC-led government of coup plot.\u201d<\/p>\n
Speaking further, Governor Fayose said; \u201cNigerians should be reminded
\nthat I raised alarm when this regime of impunity started with the
\ninvasion of the Akwa-Ibom State government house and later the Ekiti
\nState House of Assembly.\u00a0 I did say then that democracy in Nigeria was
\nbecoming unsafe in the hands of this APC government and that those
\nkeeping silent because of politics might also end up in the belly of
\nthe roaring lion that was threatening to consume our democracy.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose who ought to have joined in condemning the DSS impunity at that
\ntime kept silent for fear of the unknown.<\/p>\n
“Now it is Ifeanyi Ubah that they have visited with their tyranny, who
\nknows who will be next?<\/p>\n
\u201cWell-meaning Nigerians and the international community must therefore
\nraise their voice in condemnation of this regime of tyranny being ran
