Chairman, United Bank for Africa Plc, \u00a0Tony O. Elumelu, has hailed the
\nAfrican Finance Corporation on its various initiatives and contributions
\ntargeted towards supporting African economies in the last few years
\nnoting that these initiatives have gone a long way in fostering growth and
\ndiversity on\u00a0the\u00a0continent.<\/p>\n
Elumelu , who gave this commendation during the AFC\u2019s 10th\u00a0Anniversary
\ncelebrations of the corporation \u00a0in Abuja, Nigeria this week, was also
\nfull of praises for the corporate governance culture exhibited and
\npracticed by the AFC, adding that its impact has been felt not only in
\nAfrica, but by the world over.<\/p>\n
The UBA Group chairman who was honoured and\u00a0recognised\u00a0at the event as a
\nlong serving board member of the AFC, said, \u201cAs a pioneer chairman of Risk
\nand governance at the AFC, I interacted closely with management and the
\nAFC has world class leadership and management. We have seen great seeds
\nplanted. This is indeed an African institution domiciled in Nigeria with
\nworld class standards\u2019 he said as he referred to the Triple A rating of
\nthe AFC.<\/p>\n
Having served on the board of AFC for 9 years, he shared his vision and
\nhopes for the corporation in the next 10 years as he sat on a panel
\ntitled\u00a0The foundation for growth,\u00a0alongside the former Nigerian President
\nOlusegun \u00a0Obasanjo and the Former Central Bank governor of Nigeria,
\nProfessor Chuwuma Soludo. \u2018The commodity crisis has demonstrated that we
\nneed to attract more capital to Africa and I would like to see the AFC
\nmobilizing much needed capital to the continent as we engage with our
\npolitical leaders to create the enabling environment for growth and
\ndevelopment\u2019 Elumelu said.<\/p>\n
Acting Nigerian President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, who had earlier opened the
\nAFC\u2019s summit on Infrastructure revolution, commended Obasanjo, for his
\nclear vision in conceiving the idea of an African Development Finance
\nInstitution that would be birthed on the continent; \u201cthe idea of
\ndeveloping a wholly African Finance Institution that was the will of
\nAfrican leaders, nations and institutions, seemed far – fetched a decade
\nago\u2019 he said. He expressed pride that Africa was on the right path. \u2018This
\ncoming decade is Africa\u2019s time\u2019 he stated, saying that the world would be
\nseeing real development on the continent in the next few years.<\/p>\n
Other African leaders who were in attendance at the summit include the
\nGovernor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele; Ghana\u2019s
\nMinister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta; Nigeria\u2019s Minister of Finance, Kemi
\nAdeosun; Uganda\u2019s Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Hon
\nKasija Matia; Gambian Minister of Trade, Isatou Touray; Nigeria\u2019s former
