The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II has advised Kano state
\ngovernment to pay more attention to the sector of education saying a
\nknowledge based economy is the key to development.<\/p>\n
\u201cEducation holds the key to our development. We must continue to give
\npriority attention to the sector because it is the bedrock of any
\ndevelopment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He made the call in a keynote address at the opening of two-day
\nconference, which is part of week-long activities organized by the state
\ngovernment to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the state.<\/p>\n
The Emir further advised the government to prioritize girl-child education
\nbecause it has great potential to fast track social change and accelerate
\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n
Emir Sanusi advised the state to exploit areas where it has comparative
\nadvantage, stressing that for Kano to remain competitive, it must improve
\nagriculture using private sector driven initiatives, as well as revitalize
\nthe power sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cFixing power and agriculture are critical components of any initiative
\naimed at bringing development to Kano state\u201d, the traditional ruler
\nemphasized.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must be ready to change our way of thinking; if we must be able to
\nface the challenges and ensure economic growth and development of the
\nstate.\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, Gov. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said: \u201cAs our dear State turns
\nfifty, we have arrived at the moment in history when we are left with no
\noption but to channel our thought and action towards attaining the desired
\ngrowth and development\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo avail the youth the opportunity to grasp our historical development
\nand refresh the minds of the older generation among us, papers presented
\nat this Conference are expected to analyze the history, socio-political
\nand economic trends as defined by the administrative modalities in the
\npast 50 years\u201d, the\u00a0 governor added.<\/p>\n
According to Gov. Ganduje, \u201cthis approach and the effect of globalization,
\nICT etc would enable Kano key into developmental trends including the
\nvarious scientific options available to meet the current challenges\u201d.<\/p>\n
To re-launch Kano to greatness, he restated commitment to adhere to the
\nprinciple of continuity, consolidation, fine-tuning and introduction of
\nnew projects, pointing out that although the task is enormous, his
\nadministration is determined to change the economic landscape of the state
\nwith the lean resources available coupled with cooperation from all
