But there is a cogent reason to take it easy on the<br \/>\ninnocent youths. They are plainly the victims of gross distortion of<br \/>\nnational history that began during the civil war but is today causing more<br \/>\nharm than any good intended.<\/p>\n<p>First and foremost, the provocative quit notice would not have come to<br \/>\npass if the Arewa youths had any clue that the South-South zone, the thin<br \/>\nthread that currently holds Nigeria together, boasts of many parts of<br \/>\nIgboland, including such big cities as Asaba and Port-Harcourt (formerly<br \/>\nIguocha). The gullible youths were basically acting the script of the<br \/>\ngovernment of the day that is crudely attempting to re-write the history<br \/>\nto decree the Igbo nation merely as the \u201clandlocked\u201d Southeast political<br \/>\nzone\u2014as if the Hausa-Fulani people are limited to the Northwest political<br \/>\nzone.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of inundating the polity with bogus threats of arrests, the<br \/>\ngovernment might as well make hay of the ignorant proclamation by the<br \/>\nArewa Youths to educate the younger generation the true Nigerian history.<br \/>\nThe true history will teach them that, besides the Southeast, there is a<br \/>\nlarge natural Igbo settlement in the North Central and South-South zones.<br \/>\nThe gained knowledge can help them to come to terms with the objective<br \/>\nfact that Ohaneze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group in Nigeria,<br \/>\nfor example, is historically constituted and led by the native Igbo from<br \/>\nseven states, including Delta and Rivers States.<\/p>\n<p>The most nauseating duplicity, however, is that the Igbo political<br \/>\nleadership aids and abets the federal plot to marginalize the Igbo nation<br \/>\nsquarely to the Southeast. Notice, for instance, how they succumbed to<br \/>\nensure that all consultations with the federal government since the quit<br \/>\nnotice were limited to the \u2018red caps\u2019 from the Southeast. But the raison<br \/>\nd&#8217;\u00eatre is not difficult to fathom. Such errant politicians are the prime<br \/>\nbeneficiaries of the Nigerian corrupt enterprise and thus afraid that<br \/>\nperceived opposition to the federal conspiracy could draw the ire of the<br \/>\nanti-corruption agency against them. The following but dizzying claim by<br \/>\nthe Igbo governor of Delta State, Ifeanyichukwu Okowa, adequately tells<br \/>\nthis story:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBiafra agitation, we criticize it. Anioma land as it is said, was part of<br \/>\nBendel State; we were part of the Midwest State, we have not been part of<br \/>\nthe South East. So obviously, we cannot be said to be part of them<br \/>\n(Biafra). We may speak a similar language, but we are not part of the<br \/>\nSouth East. We were part of the Mid-West, now we are Deltans.\u201d\u00a0 Hmmm\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Okowa\u2019s statement is not only furiously spacious but also grossly<br \/>\ngrotesque. This explains why it is imperative to educate the governor<br \/>\nalong with the Arewa youths by exhuming here the tragic history that<br \/>\nChukwuma Nzeogwu, the leader of the coup cited by the Arewa youths as the<br \/>\nringing reason for the deep hatred on the Igbo, and the very man most<br \/>\nclosely linked with the death of the political totem of the North in<br \/>\nAhmadu Bello, is not from the Igbo Southeast\u2014but from the Igbo South-South<br \/>\nin the present Delta State where Okowa himself is the governor. Needless<br \/>\nto remind the moronic governor that the \u201cMidwest\u201d location of his \u201cAnioma<br \/>\nland\u201d did not prevent the federal side from inflicting the most gruesome<br \/>\ngenocide of the war in the area. The Igbo was the Igbo then and still<br \/>\ntoday. Thus, the long-standing scape-goating of the Southeast Igbo based<br \/>\non the Biafran experience is a paradox.<\/p>\n<p>All these go without saying that the ongoing propaganda by the federal<br \/>\nauthorities to isolate the current Biafran agitation to the Southeast is a<br \/>\nserious security gamble. The truth is that the Biafran struggle has never<br \/>\nbeen a solely Southeast affair. Besides millions of Igbo South-South<br \/>\npeople, including Nzeogwu, the non-Igbo from the South-South zone<br \/>\nnaturally played or have continued to play important roles. The government<br \/>\nmust recognize that mere lies are not sufficient to dampen the stake of<br \/>\nmillions of ordinary South-South people who subscribe to the Biafran<br \/>\ncause, including the likes of the spunky Ijaw High Chief Asari Dokubo.<\/p>\n<p>It is no wonder, therefore, that the Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators<br \/>\nswiftly responded to the quit notice given to the Igbo by issuing their<br \/>\nown quit notice to the Northerners living in the South-South zone.<br \/>\nAlthough the government is, interestingly, doing its best to undercut the<br \/>\nNiger Delta threat, such counter ultimatum from the Niger Delta youths is<br \/>\nwhistling reminder that the attempt to separate the Igbo Southeast from<br \/>\ntheir kith and kin in the South-South in the current crisis is gibberish.<\/p>\n<p>Vladimir Lenin famously said that, \u201cA lie told often enough becomes the<br \/>\ntruth\u201d, which is sadly true. But a nation built on a cacophony of lies is<br \/>\na sizzling time bomb. Perhaps one can grasp the idea of implementing a<br \/>\ndivide and conquer policy\u2014glossed with false history\u2014to end the civil war.<br \/>\nBut to continue to peddle such fallacy as facts in the present-day Nigeria<br \/>\nis a poisoned chalice.<\/p>\n<p>Often said is that the younger generation from the East did not experience<br \/>\nthe war and thus ought to shut up. But that admonition is mistaken. The<br \/>\nharsh economic condition and the obvious lack of equity in the land, which<br \/>\nis attributed to the Biafra, have combined to push the Eastern youths to<br \/>\ndig deeper in their research on the war. They are finding the bitter<br \/>\ntruth. They have found a pattern of state conspiracy to obliterate their<br \/>\nhistory, which has become synonymous with Biafra. They are angry and<br \/>\nrightly so.<\/p>\n<p>They are angry at the mean-spirited strategies adopted by successive<br \/>\ngovernments to undermine development and job opportunities in the<br \/>\nEast\u2014from the Abandoned Property saga, man-made landlocking of the<br \/>\nSoutheast, and lack of viable seaports and international airports in the<br \/>\nregion. These Eastern youths are perplexed why the tribes in the entire<br \/>\nSouth are being balkanized into hostile units while any semblance of bond<br \/>\nin the Northern Region is religiously guarded.<\/p>\n<p>Their findings thus far are right on the nose but obliquely incomplete. A<br \/>\nfurther study will reveal to the Eastern youths that their worst enemy are<br \/>\nthe local politicians who connive with federal authorities against the<br \/>\nregion. Similarly, instead of targeting the Igbo who have contributed<br \/>\nimmensely in the development of the North, the true enemy of the Arewa<br \/>\nyouths are the Northern politicians who have for several decades hoarded<br \/>\npolitical power as well as huge individual wealth; yet their region is the<br \/>\nmost impoverished in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, both the Northern and the Eastern youths have a common enemy in<br \/>\nthe political elites. Therefore, instead of divisive rhetoric and vile<br \/>\nhatred, the posterity beckons on the Nigerian masses\u2014from east, north and<br \/>\nwest\u2014to unite and explore democratic ways of ousting the corrupt oligarchy<br \/>\nthat has continued to cling onto power through mass deceit.
