The Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar, has expressed concern at a
\ndevelopment where social media are diverting the attention of students in
\nthe country.<\/p>\n
Mr. Abubakar expressed the feeling in Sokoto on Sunday at the closing
\nceremony of the 6th National Edition of the Quranic Recitation
\nCompetition.<\/p>\n
The Sultan said: \u201cThere is a disturbing development where the attention of
\nstudents is being diverted from their studies.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is through the use of various social media like Facebook, Twitter,
\nWhatsapp, 2Go and Instagram, among others,\u2019\u2019 he said<\/p>\n
The traditional ruler urged youth, particularly girls, to stop spending
\ntoo much time on social media at the expense of other engagements that
\nwould add more values to their life.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe rate at which girls are spending time on social network is worrisome
\nand this poses imminent danger to our society.<\/p>\n
\u201cGirls are the nerve centre of our moral and societal development and if
\nthey derail, the whole society will be in danger because they are our
\nmothers and care givers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Abubakar advised parents to ensure that their daughters spend more
\ntime on meaningful things, like reciting the Holy Qur\u2019an.<\/p>\n
\u201cDoing so will make them better mothers and care givers\u2019\u2019.
\nThe monarch also urged Muslims to desist from doing things capable of
\ntarnishing the image of their religion.<\/p>\n
The Sultan, who congratulated the winners of the competition, donated
\nN10,000 to each of the 89 participants, while the overall winner, Husna
\nNura from Katsina State, got N100,000.<\/p>\n
The sultan further promised to host the 7th edition of the competition in
\n2018.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, Governor Aminu Tambuwal said that the competition would
\nencourage girls to memorise the whole sixty chapters of the Holy Qur\u2019an.<\/p>\n
The Secretary to the State Government, Bashir Garba, represented the
\ngovernor at the occasion.<\/p>\n
Mr. Tambuwal announced a gift of hajj seat to the overall winner of the
\ncompetition in addition to N150, 000 and a deep freezer, among other
\ngifts.<\/p>\n
Other winners also went home with deep freezers and cash among other items.<\/p>\n
NAN also reports that 22 states participated in the competition which was
\ndedicated for non-Arabic Girls\u2019 Secondary Schools and it was hosted by
\nSokoto State Government.<\/p>\n
