Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has called for the amendment of
\nthe Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Act to accommodate the
\nfunding of senior secondary education across the country .<\/p>\n
Speaking on Monday \u00a0at the Government House Port Harcourt during a
\ncourtesy visit by the House of Representatives Committee on Basic
\nEducation and Services, Governor Wike also announced that Rivers State
\nwill flag off the total rehabilitation of 174 primary schools in the
\nstate.<\/p>\n
Governor Wike said rather than \u00a0establish \u00a0another commission to cater for
\nthe infrastructural needs of senior secondary schools,\u00a0UBEC should be
\nempowered by law to handle such issues as it will be more economical \u00a0for
\nthe country.<\/p>\n
“The amendment \u00a0of the UBEC Act to accommodate senior secondary education
\nwas started last administration, but it was not concluded. I therefore
\ncall for the amendment of the UBEC Act to ensure that the commission
\nundertakes the funding \u00a0of senior secondary.<\/p>\n
“When we came on board, \u00a0we discovered that the immediate past
\nadministration did not access UBEC funds because of\u00a0the \u00a0failure to pay
\ncounterpart funds. We have paid the counterpart funds and accessed
\nN5.6billion. By Thursday, we will flag off the total rehabilitation of 174
\nprimary schools across the state. These schools will also be furnished “,
\nhe said .<\/p>\n
The governor said that his administration is re-positioning basic
\neducation \u00a0to secure the future of the state.

\nHe regretted that though some states claim they have made primary
\neducation their top priority, it is worrisome that\u00a0such states \u00a0leave
\ntheir UBEC funds un-accessed.<\/p>\n
The governor informed \u00a0the committee that the State Government \u00a0has
\nwritten \u00a0to the Federal Ministry of Education \u00a0to take over\u00a0two Federal
\nSchool in Ogu\/Bolo and Aluu, which\u00a0have \u00a0been overgrown \u00a0by weed after
\nthey were completed by the Jonathan administration.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Basic
\nEducation and Services, Mr Zakari Mohamned\u00a0said Rivers State \u00a0is one of
\nthe top six states to access UBEC \u00a0funds for the development of basic
\neducation.<\/p>\n
He said that \u00a0the committee was in the state to assess the utilization of
