Philippine Ambassador to Nigeria, Shirley Ho Vicario has said that with
\nthe growing population of her country, estimated at about 110 million
\npeople at the moment, Philippine may need Nigeria\u2019s land in the future in
\nAgricultural development.<\/p>\n
She said Nigeria has so much fertile land noting however, that land
\nutilization for agricultural purposes is very minimal.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Vicario made the observation to during a visit to Governor
\nAbdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state, saying \u201cas I was coming to this
\nstate by road, I saw vast land capable of being ploughed and used to grow
\ncrops. It is all open, the land is neglected yet it is so fertile\u201d.<\/p>\n
She said her country has expertise especially in rice production
\nexplaining that through its International Rice Research Institute,
\nPhilippine can help Nigeria, especially states like Kano, to fully exploit
\ntheir rice potential, on irrigated, rainfed and upland environments.<\/p>\n
The envoy also pointed out that her country has proficiency in production
\nof fruits vegetables and fertilizer while the country needs to import of
\nbeverages like cocoa, coffee and tea from Nigeria.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Vicario also asked Kano state government to take advantage of
\nPhilippine\u2019s pool of skilled human resources in various sectors, to grow
\nits economy, pointing out that her country also has opportunities for
\nstudents from Kano, willing to study in any of the over 1,100 tertiary
\ninstitutions in the country that accept international students.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can improve relations if open communication among ourselves\u201d, said the
\nenvoy, highlighting that several opportunities exists for mutual benefit
\nbetween Nigeria and her country.<\/p>\n
Responding, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, told the visiting envoy that
\nKano has vast land and water resources for all year agriculture.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have the resources but our major problem is the technology. Commercial
\nagriculture needs mechanization, improved seeds and marketing strategies\u201d,
\nthe governor maintained, saying the support of Filipino experts is
\nexpedient in this regard.<\/p>\n
Dr. Ganduje added that the state would want to synergize with Filipino
\ninvestors to boost several sectors of the economy and improve the living
