Special Counsel Robert Mueller has impaneled a new grand jury in Washington to probe Russia\u2019s interference in the 2016 elections and possible collusion with the Trump campaign, a new report said Thursday.<\/p>\n
The development is sign that the investigation is gaining steam,\u00a0The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a pair of sources close to the probe.<\/p>\n
The grand jury began its work in recent weeks, and was considered to be evidence that Mueller\u2019s inquiry isn\u2019t going away any time soon.<\/p>\n
A spokesman for Mueller, Joshua Stueve, declined to comment to the paper.<\/p>\n
Team Trump has repeatedly attacked the probe as \u201cfake news\u201d and a witch hunt,\u201d and the Kremlin has also denied that it interfered in the race to aid Trump and hurt Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n
But the US intelligence community said there is plenty of evidence of meddling, which prompted an FBI probe, which Mueller was assigned to take over after Trump fired FBI chief James Comey.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is yet a further sign that there is a long-term, large-scale series of prosecutions being contemplated and being pursued by the special counsel,\u201d Stephen I. Vladeck, a law professor at the University of Texas, told the paper.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf there was already a grand jury in Alexandria looking at Flynn, there would be no need to reinvent the wheel for the same guy. This suggests that the investigation is bigger and wider than Flynn, perhaps substantially so.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thomas Zeno, a lawyer at the Squire Patton Boggs law firm and a former federal prosecutor, told The Journal that the grand jury was \u201cconfirmation that this is a very vigorous investigation going on.\u201d<\/p>\n
