We condemn in its entirety the recent deployment of the Nigerian army<\/p>\n
personnel to the South East region of the country and the invasion of
\nNnamdi Kanu’s residence by the Army.
\nThe Southeast States of Nigeria, which had been peaceful has come under
\nsiege as the men of Nigerian Army took over major roads of Southeast
\nstates with massive deployment of its personnel in its so called operation
\n\u2018Python Dance II’.
\nThe Nigerian Army has not stated their reasons for this deliberate assault
\non the freedom of movement of the inhabitants of the South Eastern part of
\nthe country.
\nThere has not been any incident or glaring act of threat to national
\nsecurity by any group in the region to warrant this deployment and
\ninvasion. The services of the Nigerian Army are more needed in the North
\nEastern part of Nigeria where the dreaded terrorists, Boko Haram and
\nFulani Herdsmen operates freely.
\nThis action by the military has amounted to human rights abuse as
\nenshrined in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended; section 42 (1)
\nof the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended)
\nprovides thus: A citizen of Nigeria of a particular community, ethnic
\ngroup, place of origin, sex, religion or political opinion shall not, by
\nreason only that he is such a person:
\n(a) be subjected either expressly by, or in the practical application of,
\nany law in force in Nigeria or any executive or administrative action of
\nthe government, to disabilities or restrictions to which citizens of
\nNigeria of other communities, ethnic groups, places of origin, sex,
\nreligious or political opinions are not made subject.
\nThe present action of the Federal Government through the Chief of Army
\nStaff is discrimination against the South East, the move which had
\nresulted in grave infringement on the right to freedom of movement of the
\npeople of the zone thereby creating untold hardship and tension on the
\npeople.
\nThe Nigeria Police which is the lawful security outfit to maintain
\ninternal law and security in a democratic setting has not stated that it
\nis incapable of maintaining law and order in the South East.
\nWe hereby urge the Federal Government to abort the military operation in
\norder to maintain the already existing peace and normalcy in the region.
