President Muhammadu Buhari has assured the international community of
\nNigeria\u2019s firm and unshaken commitment to democracy in the country and the
\nAfrican continent.
\nDelivering Nigeria\u2019s national statement during the General Debate of the
\n72nd Session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 72) in New York,
\nTuesday<\/span><\/span>, the President said this commitment to democratic ideals became
\nprofound with Nigeria leading ECOWAS\u2019 effort in the restoration of
\ndemocratic governance in The Gambia and Cote D\u2019Ivoire.
\n\u201cOur faith in democracy remains firm and unshaken. Our regional
\norganisation ECOWAS came together to uphold democratic principles in The
\nGambia \u2013 as we had done previously in Cote D\u2019Ivoire,\u201d he said.
\nAccording to President Buhari, \u201cThe frontiers of good governance,
\ndemocracy including holding free and fair elections, and enthronement of
\nthe rule of law are expanding everywhere, especially in Africa.\u201d
\nHe also noted that \u201cThrough our individual national efforts, state
\ninstitutions are being strengthened to promote accountability, and to
\ncombat corruption and asset recovery,\u201d stressing that \u201cThese can only be
\nachieved through the international community cooperating and providing
\ncritical assistance and material support.\u201d
\nThe President commended the UN, Germany, Italy, Greece and Turkey for
\nassisting victims of conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, and the
\ninternational community for its exemplary show of solidarity in assisting
\n\u201cthe countries and communities in the Sahel and the Lake Chad regions to
\ncontain the threats posed by Al Qaida and Boko Haram. We thank the
\nSecurity Council for visiting the countries of the Lake Chad Basin to
\nassess the security situation and humanitarian needs, and for pledging
\nassistance to rebuild lives and livelihoods.\u201d
\nHe said Nigeria is currently \u201cproviding relief and humanitarian assistance
\nto millions in internally displaced camps and those afflicted by
\nterrorism, drought, floods and other natural disasters.\u201d
\nPresident Buhari called for the sustenance of international collaborative
\nefforts in fighting international terrorism.
\n\u201cWe must collectively devise strategies and mobilise the required
\nresponses to stop fleeing ISIS fighters from mutating and infiltrating
\ninto the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin, where there are insufficient
\nresources and response capacity is weak,\u201d he said.
\nAccording to him, \u201cThis will require strong UN cooperation with regional
\norganisations, such as the African Union, in conflict prevention and
\nmanagement. The UN should continue to take primary leadership of the
\nmaintenance of international peace and security by providing, in a
\npredictable and sustainable manner, adequate funding and other enablers to
\nregional initiatives and peacekeeping operations authorized by the
\nSecurity Council.\u201d
\nThe Nigerian leader, who described the choice of theme for UNGA 72:
\nFocusing on People: Striving for Peace and Decent Life for All on a
\nSustainable Planet” as timely and appropriate, drew global attention to
\nissues and crises which impact negatively on the people, the most
\nvulnerable being children and women, and urged concerted international
\nsolutions.
\n\u201cThe international community cannot remain silent and not condemn the
\nhorrendous suffering caused by what, from all indications is a
\nstate-backed programme of brutal depopulation of the Rohingya inhabited
\nareas in Myanmar on the bases of ethnicity and religion. We fully endorse
\nthe call by the Secretary-General on the Government of Myanmar to order a
\nhalt to the ongoing ethnic cleansing and ensure the safe return of the
\ndisplaced Rohingya to their homes in safety and dignity,\u201d he said.
\nPresident Buhari also stated Nigeria\u2019s position on the current threat to
\nglobal peace and security posed by North Korea\u2019s nuclear programme.
\nAccording to him, \u201cThe most pressing threat to international peace and
\nsecurity today is the accelerated nuclear weapons development programme by
\nNorth Korea. Since the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, we have never come so
\nclose to the threat of nuclear war as we have now.
\n\u201cAll necessary pressure and diplomatic efforts must be brought to bear on
\nNorth Korea to accept peaceful resolution of the crisis.\u00a0 As Hiroshima and
\nNagasaki painfully remind us, if we fail, the catastrophic and devastating
\nhuman loss and environmental degradation cannot be imagined.
\n\u201cNigeria proposes a strong UN delegation to urgently engage the North
\nKorean Leader. The delegation, led by the Security Council, should include
\nmembers from all the regions.\u201d
\nThe President adds that, \u201cThe crisis in the Korean peninsula underscores
\nthe urgency for all member states, guided by the spirit of enthroning a
\nsafer and more peaceful world, to ratify without delay the Treaty
\nprohibiting nuclear weapons, which will be open for signature here
\ntomorrow<\/span><\/span>.\u201d
\nHe also underscored Nigeria\u2019s readiness to cooperate in addressing the
\ngrowing transnational crimes such as forced labour, modern day slavery,
\nhuman trafficking and cybercrime.
\nHe cautioned that: \u201cNew conflicts should not make us lose focus on ongoing
\nunresolved old conflicts. For example, several UN Security Council
\nResolutions from 1967 on the Middle East crisis remain unimplemented.
\nMeanwhile, the suffering of the Palestinian people and the blockade of
