His aide and two PR people nod approvingly as he talks of his jet-setting across Africa, his upcoming appointment with the Archbishop of Canterbury, and his trip to New York straight after.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3427\">With a new book to promote, the former Nigerian president from 1999 to 2007 has been busy. So too has the PR firm behind the book, offering him up for interviews far and wide.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3428\">Obasanjo can certainly handle it. Aged 80, he may look like a cuddly grandfather. But he still has plenty of fuel in his tank and fire in his belly, as I am to find out later this morning.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3429\">As we enter his hotel suite, an American news channel is blaring on the television. He instructs his aide to turn it down but not off. \u201cI won\u2019t know how to turn it on\u201d, he says. His assistant shows him the big red button on the remote before pressing it. The screen goes black. \u201cNow how will I turn it back on?\u201d the former president asks, a touch irritated. The aide quietly reassures him that he\u2019ll personally see to it as soon as the interview is over.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3430\">Obasanjo\u2019s new book,\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3431\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hurstpublishers.com\/book\/making-africa-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.hurstpublishers.com\/book\/making-africa-work\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326488000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHzI1W9c-HEIalS2ysoYwmuDT15RQ\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\"><em id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3432\">Making Africa Work<\/em><\/a>, describes itself as \u201ca guide to improving Africa\u2019s capacity for economic growth and job creation\u201d. Co-written with Greg Mills, Jeffrey Herbst and Dickie Davis, it provides a detailed overview of various political and economic challenges facing the continent. It warns of a growing youth bulge, and provides dozens of recommendations on how to encourage the private sector, diversify the economy and deliver forward-thinking leadership.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3433\">As we sit down across the small table in his plush hotel room, I start by asking Obasanjo how well his own president, Muhummadu Buhari, has been faring on these fronts since coming to office in 2015. One thing the two men have in common is the extent to which they polarise opinion, though Obasanjo here is unrelentingly equivocal.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3434\">\u201cBuhari has made some announcements. He has tried to keep on going in the area of agribusiness, but not enough,\u201d he says, slowly and cautiously. \u201cIt is not yet enough to prepare the ground for uninhibited growth of the economy, which we need\u201d.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3435\">\u201cNot enough\u201d seems a sparse and generous reading of an administration that has presided over Nigeria\u2019s first\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3436\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ffe6ecc4-9237-11e7-bdfa-eda243196c2c\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ffe6ecc4-9237-11e7-bdfa-eda243196c2c&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326488000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHy-DUSP5t3YodvfkQX4p6Gqg_lWg\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">recession<\/a>\u00a0in 25 years, rising\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3437\" href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/nigeria\/youth-unemployment-rate\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/nigeria\/youth-unemployment-rate&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326488000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHedU4KOIXRbIzebZNU9F0dhQWnCA\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">youth unemployment<\/a>, and endless policy\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3438\" href=\"http:\/\/africanarguments.org\/2017\/04\/19\/nigeria-rift-derail-president-buharis-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/africanarguments.org\/2017\/04\/19\/nigeria-rift-derail-president-buharis-agenda\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326488000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHNEhU3dJib0Rz1IQqsxqX0-O_stw\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">deadlocks<\/a>. But even when pushed on specifics, Obasanjo picks his words carefully as he repeats familiar combinations of faint praise and sympathetic criticism of the man he backed for office.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3439\">\u201cIs Buhari doing enough about it?\u201d he asks at one point of youth unemployment. \u201cI don\u2019t believe he is. Can he do enough about it? Of course he can.\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3440\">Obasanjo\u2019s vague and uncommitted answers contrast with the book he just co-wrote, which packs a handful of statistics into virtually every paragraph and offers dozens of recommendations. But the former president does eventually hone in on one specific: Nigeria\u2019s frustrated young people.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3441\">The median age of Nigeria\u2019s population is under 18, and the youth demographic continues to swell. There aren\u2019t enough jobs for them, and if Obasanjo were back in office, his priority would be education. \u201cYouth empowerment, skill acquisition and youth employment \u2013 education must be able to do that,\u201d he insists. \u201cIf you do that, the ticking bomb of possible youth explosion out of restiveness and anger will subside.\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3442\">Obasanjo attributes young people\u2019s frustrations to many of Nigeria\u2019s problems today, including the ongoing\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3443\" href=\"http:\/\/africanarguments.org\/2017\/05\/29\/nigeria-how-to-solve-a-problem-like-biafra\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/africanarguments.org\/2017\/05\/29\/nigeria-how-to-solve-a-problem-like-biafra\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEDze6uVNCvznkldmvZ4G9YYdtvxg\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">agitation<\/a>\u00a0in the south-east. Over the past couple years, the region has witnessed widespread protests, violence and military intervention as\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3444\" href=\"http:\/\/africanarguments.org\/2017\/05\/26\/biafra-50-years-on-remembering-regretting-repeating-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/africanarguments.org\/2017\/05\/26\/biafra-50-years-on-remembering-regretting-repeating-history\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF_vMK7nnYxJ27akfR2MRIx1CgE_Q\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">calls<\/a>\u00a0for some states to secede as the independent nation of Biafra have grown in volume.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3445\">The former president maintains that secession is not the solution, and says that the government\u2019s military interventions \u2013 through which\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3446\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2017\/05\/nigeria-security-forces-must-avoid-repression-of-biafra-day-protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2017\/05\/nigeria-security-forces-must-avoid-repression-of-biafra-day-protests\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGn7Eh5WWsgtQwIGGY9OXGvNCKkwg\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">hundreds<\/a>\u00a0have reportedly been killed \u2013 have \u201cmade things worse\u201d. But he accepts that young activists have real grievances.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3447\">\u201cAll youth in Nigeria have legitimate reasons to feel frustrated and angry,\u201d he offers. \u201cThe protesters don\u2019t even know what the struggle is all about, but if it gives them false hope, why not hang onto it?\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3448\">What would be his solution to the escalating crisis over calls for secession?<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3449\">\u201cLet the elders handle it or ignore it until it loses momentum,\u201d he counsels. \u201cThere are elders in any community who are still respected\u2026After all, they\u2019re their fathers and mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers, and can still be used effectively.\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3450\">Empowering old people may seem a counterintuitive approach to resolving a problem he ascribes to young people\u2019s sense of disempowerment, but it is perhaps fitting advice from a man trying to carve out his own role as an elder statesman.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3451\">I ask Obasanjo whether devolution of powers could also help assuage the regional disillusionment. The idea of \u201c<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3452\" href=\"http:\/\/africanarguments.org\/2017\/09\/12\/true-federalism-beckons-for-nigeria\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/africanarguments.org\/2017\/09\/12\/true-federalism-beckons-for-nigeria\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEpF2z3JcfANha710yKNax90PfJig\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">true federalism<\/a>\u201d and \u201crestructuring\u201d has recently escalated into one of Nigeria\u2019s main hot button political issues, with politicians, commentators and the media all debating the topic at length.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3453\">But at this, the former president sits up and fixes me with a stare from across the table.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3454\">\u201cI don\u2019t believe in true federalism. What is true federalism?\u201d, he asks. The man whose tendency in office was always to centralise rather than decentralise power is suddenly bristling. He interrupts with more questions as I respond.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3455\">\u201cWhy are they not accountable? What powers do they not have?\u201d, he interjects. \u201cThey have power,\u201d he insists, poking his finger, claiming that in all but a few sectors, states can do whatever they want.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3456\">\u201cIn fact, state governors are more powerful than the president. That\u2019s the truth,\u201d he says. \u201cIf anybody tells you they want devolution or true federalism, he doesn\u2019t know what he is talking about.\u201d With an audible huff, he leans back.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3457\">A broad range of\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3458\" href=\"http:\/\/thenationonlineng.net\/restructuring-reps-vow-not-surrender-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/thenationonlineng.net\/restructuring-reps-vow-not-surrender-power\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFCtvvvc2hocj-ecg4tNbG4RfPkww\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">current<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3459\" href=\"https:\/\/guardian.ng\/news\/its-time-to-restructure-nigeria-says-babangida\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/guardian.ng\/news\/its-time-to-restructure-nigeria-says-babangida\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFDdKd8BVwXJ5k_MTIycaiaPx82EQ\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">former<\/a>\u00a0<wbr \/>lawmakers,\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3460\" href=\"https:\/\/cruxnow.com\/global-church\/2017\/09\/11\/nigerias-bishops-take-sides-countrys-decentralization-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/cruxnow.com\/global-church\/2017\/09\/11\/nigerias-bishops-take-sides-countrys-decentralization-debate\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGEmfWUOfLR_NyLb_HnHfLDV6BEEA\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">civil society groups<\/a>, and millions of Nigerians would beg to differ. So too would the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which Obasanjo backed in 2015, at least in its\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3461\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allprogressivescongress.org\/manifesto\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.allprogressivescongress.org\/manifesto\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE3A8hWwwhUtuPaqFo_LZXk-HdnPg\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">manifesto<\/a>, which pledged to \u201camend our constitution with a view to devolving powers\u201d.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3462\">But a frustrated Obasanjo doubles down. \u201cThe fact anybody talks about it doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s right.\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3463\">\u2014<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3464\">In Nigeria, Obasanjo\u2019s eight years in office remain highly controversial.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3465\">On the one hand, those who see him as a saviour can certainly point to some impressive successes. Coming to power in 1999, he inherited a country that was fragile, coup-prone, indebted and corrupt.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3466\">In response, he defanged and professionalised the army. His government tamed rampant inflation, earned debt relief, and built up considerable foreign exchange reserves. And he established the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), a body that went on to prosecute various high-profile figures \u2013 something many Nigerians never thought could happen \u2013 and recover billions of dollars in the process.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3467\">Obasanjo\u2019s supporters\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3468\" href=\"https:\/\/maxsiollun.wordpress.com\/2008\/05\/09\/are-nigerians-being-unfair-to-obasanjo\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/maxsiollun.wordpress.com\/2008\/05\/09\/are-nigerians-being-unfair-to-obasanjo\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHVwzEpvs8yQKQ6yBa8RCspicEOIg\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">argue<\/a>\u00a0that, unlike his predecessors, he left the country in better shape than he found it. That\u2019s no mean feat.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3469\">But on the other hand, Obasanjo\u2019s critics have no shortage of ammunition either.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3470\">They point out that his macroeconomic successes depended on high oil prices and did little to improve the lives of the vast majority of Nigerians. They complain that Obasanjo imposed a handpicked successor \u2013 the relatively inexperienced Umaru Musa Yar\u2019Adua who died three years into his first term \u2013 on the country in chaotic elections in order to maintain his influence.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3471\">Obasanjo\u2019s critics also say that the EFCC ended up being a\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3472\" href=\"http:\/\/saharareporters.com\/2011\/09\/11\/obasanjo%E2%80%99s-hypocrisy-eyes-ribadu\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/saharareporters.com\/2011\/09\/11\/obasanjo%25E2%2580%2599s-hypocrisy-eyes-ribadu&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHTHA7L42jpEbf3hkIqII39spX5_Q\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">politically-wielded weapon<\/a>\u00a0and that, if anything, systems of corruption ossified under his watch. The House of Representatives recently\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3473\" href=\"https:\/\/www.today.ng\/news\/nigeria\/4899\/reps-blasts-obasanjo-constituency-projects-insist-father-corruption\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.today.ng\/news\/nigeria\/4899\/reps-blasts-obasanjo-constituency-projects-insist-father-corruption&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFXB2GUF9ZivOiQ10CWlUIn-Juw5Q\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">labelled<\/a>\u00a0Obasanjo the \u201cgrandfather of corruption\u201d, while the EFCC\u2019s former chair is\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3474\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanguardngr.com\/2011\/09\/corruption-obasanjo%E2%80%99s-eight-years-worse-than-abachas-ribadu\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.vanguardngr.com\/2011\/09\/corruption-obasanjo%25E2%2580%2599s-eight-years-worse-than-abachas-ribadu\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFjiLqd9odWWTvD4vtHrTpJnfHTYA\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">reported<\/a>\u00a0to have said corruption under Obasanjo was worse than under his notoriously self-enriching military predecessor.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3475\">Ten years after he stepped down, Obasanjo still divides opinion. Many Nigerians \u2013 both those who love and hate him \u2013 wish he would retire gracefully on his farm. But that doesn\u2019t seem to be on the cards in the foreseeable future. The 80-year-old continues to pull strings and enjoys significant influence within Nigeria\u2019s complex political web.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3476\">As Nigeria approaches the 2019 elections, for example, the question of who Obasanjo will back has been subject to much\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3477\" href=\"https:\/\/www.naij.com\/1123668-obj-set-replace-buhari-el-rufai-kwakwanso-abdullahi-sugar.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.naij.com\/1123668-obj-set-replace-buhari-el-rufai-kwakwanso-abdullahi-sugar.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEptjPNcS3gRcprB0mOMuvfVUiq3Q\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">speculation<\/a>. Buhari has been ill for much of his time in office and wannabe successors, of which there is no shortage, have been positioning themselves carefully.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3478\">Obasanjo is tight-lipped on his front. \u201cI don\u2019t cross a bridge until I get to it,\u201d he states.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3479\">One thing that seems clear, however, is that he won\u2019t be supporting his former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. The two fell out in dramatic fashion in 2007. This month, there have been growing suggestions that Abubakar is lining up to\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3480\" href=\"http:\/\/dailypost.ng\/2017\/09\/02\/2019-atikus-presidential-campaign-begins-south-south\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/dailypost.ng\/2017\/09\/02\/2019-atikus-presidential-campaign-begins-south-south\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHtdbD0FN-kioJ2nJckHLusVeLpSw\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">run in 2019<\/a>. Two days before I spoke to Obasanjo, the former VP had issued a\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3481\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/atiku\/status\/907596984323903488?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/twitter.com\/atiku\/status\/907596984323903488?lang%3Den&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFFXKW4J2rgtegnsml5yHG79cEZiA\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">challenge<\/a>, calling on anyone with evidence of his corruption to come forwards now.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3482\">When I ask whether he will respond to this challenge, Obasanjo is unmoved. \u201cRead my book\u201d, he says, blinking at me. Is Abubakar corrupt? Is he fit for presidential office? Would you support him?<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3483\">\u201cRead my book\u201d, he repeats in answer to each follow-up, unafraid to let his silence fill the room.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3484\">By his \u201cbook\u201d, Obasanjo is not referring to the carefully-researched and co-written\u00a0<em id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3485\">Making Africa Work<\/em>, but his autobiography\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3486\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/My-Watch-Olusegun-Obasanjo\/dp\/9789437579\/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1506514057&amp;sr=1-1-catcorr&amp;keywords=my+watch+obasanjo\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/My-Watch-Olusegun-Obasanjo\/dp\/9789437579\/ref%3Dsr_1_cc_1?s%3Daps%26ie%3DUTF8%26qid%3D1506514057%26sr%3D1-1-catcorr%26keywords%3Dmy%2Bwatch%2Bobasanjo&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH_DgEgz_KfNWI6_V5hn54B2x3T1g\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\"><em id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3487\">My Watch<\/em><\/a><em id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3488\">.\u00a0<\/em>Published in 2015, it comes in three volumes, extends to 1,578 pages full of copy-and-pasted speeches and reports, and is the size of a small watermelon.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3489\">Obasanjo refuses to speak further about Abubakar as we sit in his hotel room, but the former president is not usually known for holding his tongue. He is certainly not afraid to pick fights and condemn his opponents is public. However, the reverse is also true: many Nigerians continue to demand that he be held accountable for his time in office too.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3490\">As one might expect of a man who has published 2.2kg worth of autobiography\u00a0 \u2013 not including previous memoirs\u00a0<em id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3491\">My Command\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3492\">Not My Will\u00a0\u2013<\/em>\u00a0Obasanjo is highly sensitive when questions over his legacy are raised.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3493\">\u201cCome off it. I had the largest poultry farm before I became president, the largest in Africa. The fact I have N20,000 in my account does not mean I\u2019m not wealthy,\u201d he snaps, referring to questions over how he came to be a multi-millionaire despite having just a few dollars when he entered office. \u201cDo you understand that?\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3494\">When talking about abstract policy, Obasanjo tried to stay in ponderous elder statesman mode, but the moment his own reputation is under scrutiny, he switches to street-fighter mode. He turns to attack and starts pre-emptively answering questions I haven\u2019t even asked.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3495\"><em id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3496\">What\u2019s your response to people who say that while you were in off-<\/em>. \u201cMy response is that while I was in office, all sorts of accusations were made!\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3497\"><em id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3498\">When your successor came into office, he-. \u201c<\/em>My successor was ignorant! Totally ignorant.\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3499\">I raise the ongoing problem of electricity supply in Nigeria, and lessons learnt from his efforts in office, but he interrupts before I can finish again. \u201cThat is absolute nonsense. There was a report from the House of Representatives that proved that wrong\u2026 So what the hell are you talking about?\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3500\">I\u2019m no longer sure. But what\u00a0<em id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3501\">he\u00a0<\/em>is now talking about are ongoing\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3502\" href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/top-news\/216194-authorise-probe-obasanjos-16-billion-power-spending-serap-tells-cjn.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/top-news\/216194-authorise-probe-obasanjos-16-billion-power-spending-serap-tells-cjn.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGYhnezJPXIK_zDc6ToWSTIRHFzjg\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">allegations<\/a>\u00a0that much of the $16 billion spent on electricity under his watch was lost through corruption. Incidentally, contrary to his claim, the\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3503\" href=\"http:\/\/nm.onlinenigeria.com\/templates\/?a=13788\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/nm.onlinenigeria.com\/templates\/?a%3D13788&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1506703326489000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEY1i2Xj4GiOkSNdX_IJ8HW1UepKQ\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\">report<\/a>\u00a0he says \u201ctotally absolved\u201d him in fact recommended he be investigated and be \u201ccalled to account for the recklessness in the power sector during his time\u201d.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3504\">It\u2019s around this time that the PR person, who has been sitting dutifully in the corner, proposes that now might be an apposite time to wrap up. The former president and I agree, but he is not quite done.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3505\">As I try to explain that many Nigerians still want to know about his time in office, he accuses of me having been sent to interview him by Abubakar and of being a \u201cbloody idiot\u201d. I feel like I\u2019m getting a taste of why the octogenarian is still feared in Nigeria today.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2761232609601639508yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506615567331_3506\" dir=\"ltr\">I collect my things and thank the ex-president for his time. My notes remind me to ask for a photo, but as he scowls at the floor, I think better of it. An uninformed and \u201cdisrespectful\u201d youth, I have already displeased the elder.
