The Peoples Republic of China said it had arrested 3,339 fugitives who
\nfled to Nigeria and 89 other countries to escape prosecution for
\ncorruption.<\/p>\n
This was revealed by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Zhou
\nPingjian, who stated that 628 of the suspects were former officials from
\nwhom N468bn (9.36bn yuan) was recovered.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the theme, \u2018Global significance of the 19th CPC National
\nCongress and its implications for Africa,\u2019 at a colloquium on the ongoing
\n19th national congress of the Communist Party of China organised by the
\nCentre for China Studies, Pingjian noted that the party fought corruption
\nhead-on because it was aware that graft remained the greatest threat to
\nits existence.<\/p>\n
He added that the current CPC leadership launched an aggressive
\nhigh-profile anti-corruption campaign which according to him brought down
\na number of high-level officials, known as \u2018Tigers\u2019 and their accomplices
\nat the grassroots level.<\/p>\n
The diplomat said, \u201cMore than 70,000 officials, including 42 members or
\nalternate members of the CPC Central Committee, have been investigated for
\nsuspected corruption since the 18th national congress.<\/p>\n
\u201cChina also worked with the international community to hunt corruption
\nsuspects who had fled overseas; 3,339 were captured from more than 90
\ncountries and regions, including Nigeria. About 9.36bn yuan was
\nrecovered.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pingjian expressed the belief that the CPC would make more determined
\nefforts to accomplish the tasks of advancing modernisation drive,
