Proverbs.\u00a03:27<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it
\nis in your power to act.<\/p>\n

Iam neither a psychologist nor an anthropologist, but my over sixty years
\nofliving with my people, studying them and researching them have led me to
\nmanyconclusions about them. Of course, I may be wrong in my assumptions
\nandhypotheses, since they are not backed by scientific facts and data,
\nbutnevertheless, these are my conclusions, based on objective observations
\nandanalyses.\u00a0 They are by no means cast instone nor do I claim to have a
\nmonopoly of knowledge or righteousness.<\/p>\n

Ata rudimentary level, leaders need power. They need the power to
\ninfluence, todevelop, and to enable and impact people, the society and the
\nenvironment. Theseare fundamental to making things happen, and therefore
\nto the ability to do thejob of a leader. However, this isn\u2019t the same as
\nhaving authority and rank.Indeed, some of the most powerful leadership can
\narise when these things aredeliberately surrendered. The leader\u2019s power
\nshould always be a means to anend, with the \u2018end\u2019 being the achievement of
\nworthwhile outcomes for thegreater good in and of the larger society. In
\npolitics and in a democracy, theleader\u2019s power always come from the people
\nwho voted him\/her in. He\/she must beaccountable and responsible to the
\npeople.<\/p>\n

Ingovernment, the term authority is often used interchangeably with
\npower.However, their meanings differ: while power is defined as “the
\nability to influencesomebody to do something that he\/she would not have
\ndone”,authority refers to a claim of legitimacy, the justification and
\nright toexercise that power (Wikipedia)<\/p>\n

Theproblem is that in Africa, we have, intentionally or unwittingly,
\nconfusedpower with authority, and those who wield power do not know the
\nreason theyhave the power, and what they should do with it. In a way, I
\nhave some pity forthem, for they do not know what they do or are doing
\n(paraphrasing Our LordJesus Christ). Our rulers and so-called leaders
\ntherefore misuse, abuse andmisinterpret both power and authority, because
\nof their ignorance of what thesemean and represent. It is the story of our
\nlives as Africans and Nigerians. Itis a cultural problem.<\/p>\n

Iconsider myself to be a respectful African, Nigerian and Yoruba; always
\nrespectmy elders, as our culture and ethics demand. I also love my
\nculture, and I amproud of it. I engage and prosper in my African-ness and
\nits culturalattachments.<\/p>\n

Butwe have too much respect for, and defer too much to, our elders, but a
\nlot ofthose elders have become degenerate and decadent and do not
\nreciprocate. Respectgoes both ways, as I have come to learn. Our elders
\nthink they are the wisest,smartest, have monopoly of knowledge, and they
\nare the only ones that can runanything. And unfortunately, we let them
\nthink so, let them run things, andthereby let them ruin things, including
\nour lives, our environment, and ourvery survival as a people. We never
\nchallenge them or resist them. Hence, theyare always there riding
\nroughshod over us, never letting go, and reminding usat any sign of
\ninsubordination, that that they are older, and hence wiser, thanus. That’s
\nnumber One.<\/p>\n

Numbertwo is that Africans love and worship power so much that we never
\nwant to leaveit, or feel insecure to leave it. To voluntarily relinquish
\npower is anathemato our culture, I suppose, and this is exemplified in our
\npolitics andgovernment. The bulk of Dictators who have stay very long as
\nPresidents is inAfrica. (Please don\u2019t think I am saying other cultures do
\nnot; they do, butwhat they do with it, we can all see). We enjoy it; we
\nuse it to perpetrate allkinds of evil on our fellow Africans, and use
\npower to acquire wealth,position, status, etc. We use it for personal
\naggrandisement, personalacquisition of wealth and property, or to benefit
\nour immediate family andcircle of friends only. Who’d want to leave that?
\nWe prefer and want to die inpower because we are afraid of being forgotten
\ndespite the fact we never leaveany legacy. It’s a cultural thing.<\/p>\n

Thirdly,Africans will do anything to acquire or get to power; a power that
\nhe\/shedoesn\u2019t even understand. He\/she will kill for it, but will not die
\nfor it. Thenwhen he\/she gets the power, he\/she doesn\u2019t know what to do
\nwith it, exceptoppress his fellow Africans; except abuse power and
\nauthority; except stealmoney; etc. They forget easily their previous
\nhumble background and thementality is that \u201cI have suffered enough; it is
\nnow my turn to enjoy\u201d. Theyturn their back on their childhood friends,
\nfamily and the society. They buildprison walls around themselves and
\nbecome pompous, selfish, greedier, andinsensitive.<\/p>\n

Fourth,the African in power thinks he\u2019s a god; a mini-god. Some even think
\nthey areimmortal and untouchable by death and the vagaries of earthly
\nexistence. Theynever think that death can come anytime, despite their
\nill-gotten wealth andtheir sins against humanity and their people, and
\nthat somehow, they must payfor their crimes and Nemesis must catch up with
\nthem. Give an African a uniform(soldier, police, civil defence, customs,
\nimmigration, prisons, traffic warden,Man o\u2019War, and even Boys Scout), and
\nhe becomes a scourge of his people,strutting on the street with his\/her
\nstarched uniform, and when you givehim\/her a gun in addition, then he\/she
\nbecomes the giver of life or death\u00a0 \u2013 he\/she becomes obstinate and
\ntyrannical,oppresses them, and uses his\/her position to acquire wealth and
\nproperties andother luxuries of life with the macabre belief that he\/she
\nis now immune frompoverty, diseases, mortality and the sufferings of the
\nworld. Our daily livesand society are replete with examples.<\/p>\n

Finally,it is very rare that Africans use their wealth and power, as well
\nas knowledge,education, skills, etc. for the benefit and welfare of the
\ngeneral society,instead we use all these to ensure our fellow people do
\nnot rise to be at thesame level with us or above us, and therefore despite
\nmany rich Africans in andout of the continent, you will find very few
\nphilanthropists of Africandescent. In fact, the educated African is very
\ndangerous to the health andwelfare of his fellow, less educated Africans.
\nEducation, especially Western,is used to subjugate the people; to dupe
\nthem, to fool them and to steal fromthem. For Islamic education, it is the
\nsame, and has created feudalism in manyparts of Africa; only the Islamic
\nscholars can interpret the Koran and theyknow how to use it to blindfold
\ntheir followers.<\/p>\n

Theyouths talking today will become elders\u00a0tomorrow<\/span><\/span>, and see how\/what they
\nwillturn out to be. We are already seeing them reverting to type. It is a
\nculturalthing; a cultural malaise. You need examples? Again, the society
\nand the polity are replete with them.<\/p>\n

Theintent of leadership holding certain power, coupled with authority, is
\ntodeliver worthwhile outcomes for the greater good, and in the pursuit of
\navision of a better\u00a0tomorrow<\/span><\/span>. The application of power should be
\nsupportive tothat intent. It isn\u2019t about winning, or scoring points, or
\npulling rank, orgaining personal benefit. As with all aspects of
\ncontemporary leadership, it\u2019snot about you (the leader), but about
\neverybody else, from customers, tocolleagues, to followers, to the public
\nand to the society.<\/p>\n

Aleader\u2019s power should always be used for good. And that is not what we
\narehaving in many parts of the African continent. The good is not always
\nbeing theaim of our leaders.<\/p>\n

Theburden lies in the people and the society also, attributable to our
\nculture andtraditional ways of doing things, of revering anybody that
\nrears their head asa leader or ruler; probably poverty of materials and
\nthe mind, and maybe a doseof the effect of colonialism and the slave
\ntrade, and added ignorance,illiteracy and primordiality.<\/p>\n
