{"id":60000,"date":"2017-10-26T18:20:41","date_gmt":"2017-10-26T17:20:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=60000"},"modified":"2017-10-26T18:20:41","modified_gmt":"2017-10-26T17:20:41","slug":"justice-salami-rejects-buharis-appointment-monitor-corruption-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/justice-salami-rejects-buharis-appointment-monitor-corruption-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a0Justice Salami Rejects Buhari&#8217;s Appointment To Monitor Corruption Cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m_-7216942777330765597yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1509035646733_3237\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-7216942777330765597yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1509035646733_3237\">\u00a0<span id=\"m_-7216942777330765597yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1509035646733_3287\">The Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the National Judicial Council, Walter Onnoghen, has confirmed the resignation of retired Justice Ayo Salami as Chairperson of the Corruption and Financial Crimes Cases Trial Monitoring Committee.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-7216942777330765597yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1509035646733_3290\">Mr. Salami was appointed chairperson of the committee by the NJC in September, years after he left office as president of the Appeal Court under controversial circumstances.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-7216942777330765597yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1509035646733_3291\">A statement from the NJC\u2019s Director of Communication, Soji Oye, announced the appointment, saying Mr. Salami would head a 15-member committee to implement the task of monitoring corruption cases in the country.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-7216942777330765597yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1509035646733_3292\">\u201cThe Committee\u2019s primary functions include; Regular monitoring and evaluation of proceedings at designated courts for financial and economic crimes nationwide; Advising the Chief Justice of Nigeria on how to eliminate delay in the trial of alleged corruption cases; Giving feedback to the Council on progress of cases in the designated courts, conduct background checks on judges selected for the designated courts; and Evaluating the performance of the designated courts,\u201d Mr. Oye said.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-7216942777330765597yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1509035646733_3293\">Mr. Onnoghen\u2019s spokesperson, Awassam Bassey, confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1194512512\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Thursday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0that Mr. Salami had turned down the appointment.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-7216942777330765597yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1509035646733_3294\">\u201cBesides what we see in the media, we cannot exactly say what Justice Salami\u2019s reasons are for declining to undertake this all-important national assignment that he was called upon to perform,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-7216942777330765597yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1509035646733_3295\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cHis Lordship the Hon Chief Justice of Nigeria awaits Hon Salami\u2019s letter of resignation.
