It is given, most times without question but never in<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">isolation of other moral variables.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Respect is a very important tenet of the concept of OMOLUABI, among many<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">others that I will touch on here.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">We give respect to our elders as a matter of course. Without being<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">individually demanded, our culture and tradition make it obligatory on<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">everyone in every stratum of our society to give it to whom it is due.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">This principle is so deep that the Yoruba believe that at times an elderly<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">could cheat a younger one without too much protest from the youngster. I<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">believe that is the origin of the saying, &#8220;K\u00f2 s\u00ed nkan t&#8217;a nfi \u00e0gb\u00e0 d\u00edd\u00e0<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">nse ju p\u00e9 k\u00e2 fi yan omod\u00e9 je.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">However, the Yoruba in its full understanding of human nature which has<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">been functionally related to its dexterity in social engineering that had<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">been evident in the socio-political institutions created in its History,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">has placed enormous responsibility on the leaders and elders in a Yoruba<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">social set up.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Sayings such as &#8220;\u00c0gb\u00e0lagb\u00e0 kii se l\u00e1ngb\u00e1l\u00e1ngb\u00e1,&#8221; &#8220;A gb\u00f3 ej\u00f3 en\u00eckan d\u00e1,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\u00e0gb\u00e0 \u00f2s\u00eck\u00e0 ni,&#8221; &#8220;\u00c0gb\u00e0 k\u00ec\u00ed w\u00e0 l&#8217;\u00f3j\u00e0 k\u00ed or\u00ed omo tuntun w\u00f3,&#8221; &#8220;\u00c0gb\u00e0 k\u00f2 s\u00ed ni<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\u00ecl\u00fa, \u00ecl\u00fa b\u00e0j\u00e9, ba\u00e2le il\u00e9 k\u00fa, il\u00e9 d&#8217;ahoro,&#8221; &#8220;\u00c0\u00ec f&#8217;\u00e0gb\u00e0 f&#8217;\u00e9n\u00eckan ni k\u00f2 j&#8217;\u00e1y\u00e9<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\u00f3 g\u00fan&#8221; among many others are witting expressions of our ethos.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">In these aphorisms, elders and leaders are expected to be responsible at<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">all times. They are expected to be above board at all times. They&#8217;re<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">expected to be stainless moral leaders and authorities in our milieu.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Based on that, they would have earned the respect that the society made<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">obligatory on the rest to give unto them.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">But the Yoruba people, because of their understanding of the human nature<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">believe that there would always be some let downs, some disappointments<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">among the old, elders and or leaders, it was made mandatory by the Yoruba<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">tradition to call such errant ones to order. Hence the saying, &#8220;\u00c0gb\u00e0lagb\u00e0<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">t\u00ed k\u00f2 b\u00e1 mo eran \u00e8 l&#8217;\u00f2b\u00e8, \u00e0 ny\u00f3o fun ni.&#8221; This may be one of the reasons<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Uncle Bola Ige once contended in absolute terms that the Yoruba &#8220;have the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">best Culture in the world.&#8221; Despite the temptation of such a claim and the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">naturally enticing embedded pride in it as a proud Yoruba son, I would not<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">agree with this statement of Uncle Bola. I would rather apply the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">philosophical rule of the Theory of Relativism and say that the Yoruba<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">have one of the best Cultures in the world.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Now, the command of respect by the elders or leaders alike and the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">obligation of all members of the society to observe this rule is<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">functionally related to acts of moral probity, honesty, integrity and<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">dignity on the part of the elders and leaders. Their utterances, acts or<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">deeds must be beyond reproach. The moment this expectation is breached by<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">the older ones or leaders, all bets are off. Such leaders are open to<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">remonstrations, rebuke, restrictions and conscriptions where applicable.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">This is one of the reasons why the Yoruba could call an Oba &#8220;Al\u00e1se \u00e8kej\u00ec<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\u00d2r\u00ecs\u00e0,&#8221; or &#8220;K\u00e0b\u00edy\u00e8s\u00ed&#8221; or &#8220;Ka bi \u00f3 k\u00f2 s\u00ed&#8221; and yet would depose such a king<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">or Oba if and when he over steps his boundaries.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">In Yoruba land, respect is not just for the take. It is not given without<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">conditions. Thus, when a leader or an elderly begins to lie in the public<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">shamelessly or engage in\u00a0 ignominies, it is automatic that he would lose<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">respect. Omoluabi concept lays a responsibility on a leader or elder to<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">stay clear of behaviours or acts that could tarnish his integrity and make<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">him lose respect.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">As Yoruba, it is incumbent upon us all, to ensure that all leaders who<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">have become loose cannons and are contributing to the moral paralysis that<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">is destroying our society be called out appropriately. Political<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">affiliation or loyalty should not be a factor in this venture. We can not<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">allow our politics to determine or define our morality. Rather our<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">morality should determine and or define our politics.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">One of the major reasons many people have been demonizing Yoruba faiths as<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">compared to either Christianity or Islam is because Yoruba faiths are very<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">consequential. The underlying irresponsibility embedded in human nature<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">nay Nigerians have made them to malign and demonize Yoruba faiths. You<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">can&#8217;t swear falsely with Yoruba\u00a0 Orishas. You would pay a very heavy and<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">consequential price if you do. Whereas, you could get away with false<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">swearing using the Bible or the Quran. This is why a President or Governor<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">would begin stealing the very day he or she takes Office because he or she<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">is very sure nothing would happen as a result of that swearing-in.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">This is why degeneration and decadence is on the increase. The least we<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">can do is to eliminate respect for elders or leaders who don&#8217;t deserve it.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">By their actions and utterances, they have violated the concept of<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Omoluabi. Such elders or leaders could not expect to benefit from the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">positives of the Omoluabi concept.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">There must always be consequences for actions.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The Yoruba are complete in their understanding of human nature.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">May \u00c8d\u00f9m\u00e0r\u00e8 bless my ancestors.
