After surviving leadership crisis that almost crippled it, the opposition<\/div>\n
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will today continue its great revival at an<\/div>\n
elective national convention in Abuja, during which a new leadership is<\/div>\n
expected to emerge, to steer the party into the 2019 elections.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
However, one of the chairmanship aspirants, Bode George made a surprise<\/div>\n
withdrawal from the race yesterday, blaming his action on the failure of<\/div>\n
the party to uphold micro zoning.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This elective convention is a make or mar event for the party, because if<\/div>\n
it fails to get this particular act right, it may head back to political<\/div>\n
doldrums.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
With the withdrawal of George, eight aspirants are now locking horns to<\/div>\n
clinch the national chairmanship position, the party\u2019s most coveted<\/div>\n
trophy. Yesterday, the Screening Committee of the party cleared all of<\/div>\n
them as suitable for the position.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Chairman of the committee, Mr. Osagie Ize-Iyamu, subsequently presented<\/div>\n
certificates of clearance to all of them at the party\u2019s National<\/div>\n
Secretariat located in Abuja.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In the race for today\u2019s chairmanship election are Prof. Tunde Adeniran, a<\/div>\n
former Minister of Education; Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, another former<\/div>\n
minister; Mr. Jimi Agbaje, the former Lagos state governorship candidate<\/div>\n
of the party in the 2015 election and Uche Secondus, a former acting<\/div>\n
national chairman of the party.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Others are Otunba Gbenga Daniel, a former governor of Ogun state; Chief<\/div>\n
Rasheed Ladoja, former governor of Oyo state; Dr. Raymond Dokpesi, a media<\/div>\n
mogul; and Chief Akintayo Akin-Deko.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
As part of last minute strategic alliances for the election, Secondus had<\/div>\n
his chances bolstered, yesterday morning, with the leadership of the<\/div>\n
South-east caucus adopting him for chairmanship.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
From available statistics, the former acting national chairman looks set<\/div>\n
for victory.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
THISDAY gathered that the optimism is based on an alliance reached between<\/div>\n
the South East and the South-South zones of the party which from all<\/div>\n
indications have the bulk of the delegates that would vote to elect the<\/div>\n
next chairman.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The leadership of the South East caucus met yesterday morning to adopt<\/div>\n
Secondus.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The zone in a statement said: \u201cWe are very conscious of the personality of<\/div>\n
who becomes the national chairman of our great party for the next four<\/div>\n
years. Based on the foregoing, we have unanimously in our today\u2019s<\/div>\n
stakeholders meeting, here in Abuja decided that we will back an aspirant<\/div>\n
that has character and content. In this circumstance, and without<\/div>\n
prejudice to the rights of other aspirants to this national chairmanship<\/div>\n
position, credible and transparent election, we have decided to back and<\/div>\n
vote for Prince Uche Secondus for the position of national chairman of our<\/div>\n
great party.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWe have also agreed to vote the following positions zoned to the South<\/div>\n
east, Col Austin Akobundu for national organising secretary; Hon Ude Okoye<\/div>\n
for youth Leader; Alphonsos Gerald (Deputy financial secretary).\u201d<\/div>\n
Secondus had earlier been endorsed by South-south governors and the entire<\/div>\n
South-south caucus of the party.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
However, he would have Adeniran to contend with today, following the<\/div>\n
decision of leaders of the party from the North to back a South-western<\/div>\n
candidate.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The group of northern elders, which included Professor Jerry Gana, former<\/div>\n
Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau and former speaker, Benue State<\/div>\n
House of Assembly, Margaret Icheen, after a meeting of the PDP Northern<\/div>\n
Elders and Leaders Forum urged northern delegates to vote for only<\/div>\n
aspirants from the South-west zone.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Sources said Adeniran enjoys the support of the Jerry Gana-led group and<\/div>\n
that he would get a bulk of the votes of delegates from this region.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
However, the campaigns leading to today\u2019s election was bitter and intense,<\/div>\n
resulting in sharp division among party members.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It means that whoever emerges the national chairman will face a daunting<\/div>\n
task of not only shepherding the party towards an election that is barely<\/div>\n
14 months away, but also will spend considerable time trying to reconcile<\/div>\n
warring members and political enemies who may constitute obstacles in the<\/div>\n
run towards the election.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The national leadership of the party had zoned the office of the national<\/div>\n
chairman to the southern part of the country. However, it refused to<\/div>\n
micro-zone the office to any of the three geo-political zones in the<\/div>\n
southern region.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Apart from the support he is getting from the South East, Secondus has<\/div>\n
also received solid backing from the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike,<\/div>\n
who has thrown everything into the game to ensure that the state produces<\/div>\n
the next national chairman of the PDP.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Secondus came into the race without much fun fare but it is believed that<\/div>\n
his confidence is based on his short but eventful reign in office during<\/div>\n
which he tried to revive the party by refocusing its agenda and setting<\/div>\n
the foundation for reforming its affairs.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to his campaign office, Secondus\u2019 experience and disarming human<\/div>\n
relations are the most potent ingredients for him now because of the<\/div>\n
urgent harmonious environment the party would need immediately after the<\/div>\n
convention to confront the challenges ahead.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It said that as a committed loyal party man, who has held virtually all<\/div>\n
critical positions in the party at various levels of the party structure,<\/div>\n
Secondus stands out well-equipped more than anybody in the race at this<\/div>\n
time to take the party back to power.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cSecondus\u2019 clear understanding of political party administration, his firm<\/div>\n
grip of the party\u2019s workings, are clearly his biggest strength as the<\/div>\n
party is poised to take its rightful place in the polity and to quickly<\/div>\n
save Nigerians from the obvious lack of direction the APC government has<\/div>\n
subjected the country into in the last two years.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Adeniran was, until a few days ago, being tipped to clinch the position.<\/div>\n
He was said to be enjoying the support of some prominent leaders of the<\/div>\n
party, especially from the north. The former minister is seen as a<\/div>\n
credible personality who is without blemish.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
But along the line, he had cause to petition the leadership of the party,<\/div>\n
alleging bias in the manner in which the whole chairmanship race was<\/div>\n
proceeding.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
However, Adeniran\u2019s campaign organisation addressed<\/div>\n
Journalists last Thursday and expressed confidence that the process would<\/div>\n
be fair and transparent.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
George: PDP Now Headed for Self-Destruct<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
One of the chairmanship aspirants, Bode George yesterday made a surprise<\/div>\n
withdrawal from the race, blaming his action on the failure of the party<\/div>\n
to uphold micro zoning.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Addressing journalists yesterday night at his campaign headquarters in<\/div>\n
Abuja, George also blamed the alleged monetisation of the chairmanship<\/div>\n
race, saying that the PDP is on the verge of self- destruct.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cLet me make it abundantly clear that I, Olabode George, did not step down<\/div>\n
for anybody. I will not step down for anybody but what I am doing is to<\/div>\n
withdraw from the race on principle and against the observed wrong.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI listened to my younger brother on television and I feel that he has<\/div>\n
insulted my people of Yoruba. I demand that he tenders apology to the<\/div>\n
Yoruba race for insulting them on a national television.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He alleged that Wike had yesterday questioned the contribution of the<\/div>\n
South West to PDP in terms of electoral value since the Obasanjo<\/div>\n
administration, which will qualify it to insist on picking the<\/div>\n
chairmanship slot.<\/div>\n
Dokpesi Disagrees with Endorsement by Edo PDP<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In a related development, another chairmanship aspirant, Dokpesi has said<\/div>\n
that there was no truth in a report that the Edo state chapter of the<\/div>\n
party had reached a decision to give block vote to any aspirant.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Addressing journalists yesterday evening, Dokpesi said that he had not<\/div>\n
dropped out of the race for the Chairmanship elections at the PDP<\/div>\n
Convention, as was erroneously being peddled.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cIt is now very clear that some PDP members, masquerading as leaders are<\/div>\n
hell bent on sabotaging and inflicting several damages on the<\/div>\n
well-organised and victory-bound aspiration of High Chief Raymond Aleogho<\/div>\n
Dokpesi.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThe position of this campaign organisation is that only delegates to the<\/div>\n
Convention can and will decide the fate of all aspirants on the floor of<\/div>\n
the Eagle Square and Convention grounds on Saturday, 9 December, 2017.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cRaymond Dokpesi has not and will not withdraw from the race for any<\/div>\n
reasons whatsoever,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Jonathan says he has no preferred candidates<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Meanwhile, former President Goodluck Jonathan has sent a goodwill message<\/div>\n
to members of the PDP, as they prepare for today\u2019s national convention.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In the message released by his media adviser, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, the<\/div>\n
former President expressed his optimism that the convention would produce<\/div>\n
positive outcomes which would help the party regain its pride of place in<\/div>\n
the affairs of the nation.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Jonathan also reiterated that he has no preferred candidate, stressing<\/div>\n
that he is prepared to work with all those that would emerge as new<\/div>\n
leaders, in the interest of the party and the nation.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The message reads: \u201cAs the father of the party, ex-President<\/div>\n
Jonathan is prepared to work with all those that will emerge as members of<\/div>\n
the new NWC, to ensure that the party regains its pride of place in the<\/div>\n
affairs of the nation.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThe former President is pleased with the dedication and enthusiasm of all<\/div>\n
party members towards building a strong PDP and wishes all participants<\/div>\n
successful deliberations, as they seek to freely elect members of the<\/div>\n
National Working Committee that will lead the party for the next four<\/div>\n
years.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cDr. Jonathan is impressed with the level of preparations for the<\/div>\n
convention, especially with the number of candidates and the spread and<\/div>\n
vibrancy of the campaigns, which has established a new paradigm for<\/div>\n
intra-party elections, in the country.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cContrary to speculations and permutations by some interest groups, Dr.<\/div>\n
Jonathan has never discussed or plotted with others against the ambition<\/div>\n
of any of the candidates, as is being falsely reported by those who are<\/div>\n
adept at spreading negative stories against the immediate past President.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThe former President is therefore optimistic that the convention will<\/div>\n
produce a positive outcome that will help the PDP consolidate its position<\/div>\n
