President Muhammadu Buhari\u00a0Thursday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in Abuja explained that the policy
\nproposed by Federal Government in response to the frequent clashes between
\nherdsmen and farmers in the country is not meant to colonize any part of
\nthe country.<\/p>\n

Receiving Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) led by Archbishop
\nIgnatius Kaigama, President Buhari said the intention of government is to
\ncreate grazing locations for cattle rearers, which has now been
\nmisconstrued as another form of colonization.<\/p>\n

President Buhari regretted that the well-thought out policy of the Federal
\nGovernment, which was conceived after wide consultations with
\nstakeholders, had been largely misunderstood by a section of the public.<\/p>\n

He, however, assured the Catholic Bishops that the Federal Government will
\ncontinue to explore all opportunities and support initiatives to ensure
\npeace and stability in restive areas.<\/p>\n

Condemning recent spate of killings in Benue, Adamawa, Taraba, and Zamfara
\nstates, the President said security operatives would ensure prosecution of
\nperpetrators and all those found with illegal arms in the affected areas.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018The impression created that I was sitting in an air-conditioned office
\nand home, enjoying myself while these things happened, is dishonest.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018At every step, I have tried to foresee these problems because I have the
\nexperience as a former military officer who commanded three out of the
\nfour divisions of the Nigerian army, in Lagos, Ibadan and Jos.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018I am quite aware of the problems we have and I am doing my best to get
\nlaw enforcement agencies to be on alert,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

The President told the Catholic Bishops that he would not be tired of
\nrecounting remarkable progress recorded in the areas of security, economy
\nand the fight against corruption.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018We have done very well on security in the North East, when you compare
\nwhat the condition was before we came in and what it is now.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018On the economy, particularly agriculture, I am very pleased that God
\nanswered the prayers of Nigerians who prayed for bountiful harvest.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018People have taken advantage of Federal Government policies and
\nprogrammes to return to the farm and they have not regretted,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

On the fight against corruption, the President reiterated that government
\nwould be guided by the law in the investigation and prosecution of all
\ngraft-related cases.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018People are being prosecuted systematically with evidence.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018If a permanent secretary has five houses in Abuja, two in Kaduna and one
\nin Borno and Sokoto and he can\u2019t account for the properties and there are
\nbank transactions linking him to the properties, the prosecuting agencies
\nwill not have difficulties to make progress on the case.”<\/p>\n

On the question of Federal character, the President declared that no
\nethnic group or political zone has been deliberately marginalised in the
\nappointments made so far.<\/p>\n

He, however, added that he would take a second look at areas on which
\nissues have been raised, when a compendium of all government appointments
\nis submitted to him.
\nIn his remarks, Archbishop Kaigama pledged that the Catholic Church in
\nNigeria would continue to support the Buhari administration and make its
\ncontribution to nation-building through prayers, admonitions and
\nassistance to needy Nigerians.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018As the voice of the people, we shall continue to highlight the plight of
\nour people and play our prophetic role of sensitising the government, thus
\npromoting good governance, national unity and cohesion,\u2019\u2019 Kaigama said.<\/p>\n
