The senate\u00a0on Thursday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0went into a rowdy session after Eyninaya Abaribe, a<\/strong>
\nPeoples Democratic Party (PDP)\u00a0 from Abia state, described President<\/strong>
\nMuhammadu Buhari as incompetent.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abaribe had moved a motion reacting to a comment made by Buhari in UK on<\/strong>
\nWednesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

While receiving Justin Welby, archbishop of Canterbury, Buhari blamed the<\/strong>
\nfarmers, herders clashes on militias trained by Muammar Gaddafi, former<\/strong>
\nprime minister of Libya.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But speaking on the floor on the chamber, Abaribe wondered why the<\/strong>
\npresident was still the commander-in-chief when he could not protect the<\/strong>
\ncountry from invasion.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTwo explanations were given by highly ranked security personnel on the<\/strong>
\nmatter of herdsmen versus farmers clashes,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, the IGP said that these killings were as a result of laws<\/strong>
\nbeing past by states. Secondly, the defence minister said that these<\/strong>
\nkillings were as a result of the blockage of routes through which these<\/strong>
\nherders are to move their cattle.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we continued to look at all these explanations. Yesterday in London,<\/strong>
\nthe commander-in-chief of the armed forces of Nigeria and the president of<\/strong>
\nNigeria said the killings are as a result of the people who were trained<\/strong>
\nby the late Muammar Gaddafi and so implying that these people doing these<\/strong>
\nkillings in Nigeria are from outside Nigeria and even if he says they are<\/strong>
\ninvaders from outside Nigeria, what it means is that now it validates my<\/strong>
\nlast point on this floor.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen a commander-in-chief cannot take care of invaders, invading Nigeria<\/strong>
\nwhy is he still a commander-in-chief, why do we continue to indulge? Why<\/strong>
\ndo we continue to indulge this president that everywhere goes along to<\/strong>
\ntell everyone outside this country that he is totally incompetent. Because<\/strong>
\nit is obvious.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

At this point, lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenged<\/strong>
\nhim, with shouts of \u201cpoint of order\u201d erupting in the chamber.<\/strong><\/p>\n

After calm returned to the chamber, Ahmed Lawan, majority leader, cited<\/strong>
\norder 53 of the senate rules, saying the president deserves respect.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe president of the federal republic of Nigeria is the leader of this<\/strong>
\ncountry and deserves the respect and courtesy of this chamber and those of<\/strong>
\nus in it,\u201d Lawan said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI was once a member of the opposition and I do not recall ever insulting<\/strong>
\nthe then president or insult him. This is our institution. If we do not<\/strong>
\nconduct ourselves with respect, nobody will. I want to ask my colleague to<\/strong>
\nimmediately withdraw his statement and apologise to this chamber.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cautioning Abaribe, Senate President Bukola Saraki said words that are<\/strong>
\noffensive should not be used.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Responding, Abaribe said: \u201cI am very well guided by you but there are<\/strong>
\nwords that there are no alternatives to. What I did was to interpret the<\/strong>
\nwords by Mr President in London. If any word I used is misunderstood by<\/strong>
\nanyone, I apologise. What I am saying is simple.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
