Immediate past president of the Senate, Senator David Mark at the weekend<\/span>
took stock of his 70 years sojourn on earth and renewed his convenant with<\/span>
God to serve him and humanity faithfully.<\/span>
Senator Mark told\u00a0 a crowded gathering in Abuja to commemorate\u00a0 his<\/span>
birthday that \u201cI have resolved to serve God and humanity ceaselessly for<\/span>
the rest of my life .<\/span>

\u201cI will intensify my prayers and do the work of mercy for peace and unity<\/span>
of Nigeria where\u00a0 genuine friendship and brotherhood, devoid of<\/span>
parochialism reigns.<\/span>

\u201cWhen I was growing up, I made friends across board devoid of ethnicity,<\/span>
tribe or religion.\u00a0 And we saw ourselves as brothers and sisters with a<\/span>
common destiny. But\u00a0 what we see today is a celebration of ethnic or<\/span>
religious champions\u00a0 in our national life.<\/span>

\u201cThis is not the Nigeria of our dream. \u201cWe must rise up to re-orientate<\/span>
our people in order to reverse the trend for good. We must see ourselves<\/span>
as one people with a common destiny and purpose.<\/span>
He expressed optimism that a better Nigeria where every one is free to<\/span>
live and pursue his or her legitimate ambition in any part of the country\u00a0<\/span>
without fear of intimidation or molestation is\u00a0 possible “if we see<\/span>
ourselves as brothers and sisters “<\/span>

President Muhammadu Buhari who spoke through his special Adviser on<\/span>
Natonal Assembly matters, Senator Ita Enang described Mark as a brave<\/span>
soldier and astute politician who has made positive impact in the<\/span>
development of the nation.<\/span>
In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki<\/span>
showered encomiums on his predecessor for the foundation he laid in the<\/span>
senate as well as his contributions to national development.<\/span>
Saraki requested Mark to always make his knowledge and wealth of<\/span>
experience available for upcoming leaders\u00a0 to profit from, pointing out<\/span>
that \u201cMark is a rare gift to Nigeria\u201d.<\/span>
Also speaking, the Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal<\/span>
described Mark as a patriotic and relentless public servant who\u00a0 over the<\/span>
years demonstrated unquestionable loyalty to his fatherland.<\/span>
National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Uche Secondus<\/span>
praised Senator Mark for his steadfastness, recalling that in the wake of<\/span>
the gale of defection that hit the Party after its defeat in 2015, the<\/span>
former Senate President stood firm, when he said he will remain in PDP no<\/span>
matter the odds.<\/span>
Senator Mark had insisted that he will not abandon the\u00a0 PDP saying “I will<\/span>
remain the last man standing, even if others decamps”.<\/span>
Mark\u2019s classmate, General Alwali Kazir who spoke on behalf of Nigerian<\/span>
Defence Academy (NDA) Course 3 Alumni association\u00a0 commended Mark for his\u00a0<\/span>
relentless and unblemished\u00a0 service to the nation.<\/span>
Earlier, the chairmen of the occasion, General T. Y. Danjuma noted the<\/span>
indomitable spirit of Mark which he said is needed to navigate through the<\/span>
murky political water in Nigeria.<\/span>
Eminent Nigerians including four\u00a0 former Presidents of the Senate,<\/span>
Iyorchia Ayu, Adolf Wabara ,\u00a0 Anyim Pius Anyim ,\u00a0 Ken Nnamani ,\u00a0 the<\/span>
incumbent Saraki, governors, past and present members of the National<\/span>
Assembly ,\u00a0 Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan ,\u00a0<\/span>
captains of industry among others attended the event.<\/span>
