Ibrahim Babangida, at his Uphill Mansion in Minna, the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Niger State capital yesterday.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">He cited instances of manipulation in the elections. According to him,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">while the electronic voting was religiously observed in the southern part<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">of the country, it was not so observed in the north.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">He remarked: \u201cWhen the electronic voting was introduced, I was in support<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">of it, but I observed what happened in the 2015 general election and I<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">changed my mind.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThis is because it was religiously observed in the southern part of the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">country, but it was not so religiously observed in the northern parts of<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">the country. It was from that moment that I began to have some<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">reservations about the electronic voting pattern.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThere are many ways of rigging election. What happened in 2015 where the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">majority of southerners resident in the north were scared away from their<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">places of residence, where they had registered, to their place of origin<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">and therefore could not have the opportunity to vote, was rigging.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\u201cAgain some of the southerners who did not run away were afraid to come<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">out and vote on the day of election. So scaring people from coming out to<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">vote for the candidates of their choice is also a form of rigging.\u201d<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The 2015 election led to the emergence of Major- General Muhammadu Buhari<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">(rtd), a northerner, as president while the then incumbent, Dr. Goodluck<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Jonathan, a southerner, lost.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Earlier at the meeting with Babangida, he lamented that most leaders of<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">northern extraction had for long taken the support of northerners for<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">granted, stressing that henceforth, it would not be business as usual.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Yakassai said they were at Babangida\u2019s house to inform the former leader<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">of the objectives of the organisation dedicated to the unity and progress<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">of the north.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Babangida praised the efforts of the group and assured them of his support<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">as long as they worked for the unity of Nigeria.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Also at the meeting were Senator Joseph Waku, Alhaji Ghali Na Abba, Dr.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Mohammed Data, Alhaji Abba Hana, Hajiya Inna Corona, Hajiya Zainab Main,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Gimbia Rani, Alhaji Bala Mohammed and Dr. Umaru Babangida Aliyu, among<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">others.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"jb_0 X_6MGW N_6Fd5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"H_7jIs D_F ab_C Q_69H5 E_36RhU\" data-test-id=\"toolbar-hover-area\">\n<div class=\"D_F W_6D6F r_BN gl_C\" data-test-id=\"card-toolbar\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Elder statesman and prominent politician, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, has disclosed that massive rigging took place in the North in the 2015 general elections.
