BySufuyan OjeifoIf the invasionof the Senate in plenary on Wednesday,<\/div>\n
April 18, 2018 by two thugs sponsored bysuspended Senator Ovie Omo-Agege<\/div>\n
(APC, Delta Central), during which theyattacked the Mace, the legislative<\/div>\n
symbol of authority, and made away with itin a Rambo-like operation, is a<\/div>\n
foreshadower of what to expect in the weeks andmonths ahead of the 2019<\/div>\n
general elections, then we must all worry.To be sure,Omo-Agege was<\/div>\n
suspended for his remarks that that the amendment of the 2010Electoral Act<\/div>\n
that reordered the sequence of the 2019 general elections, movingthe<\/div>\n
presidential election from the first to the last in the sequence,<\/div>\n
wastargeted at President Muhammadu Buhari. \u00a0Prior to hissuspension,<\/div>\n
Omo-Agege had apologised to the Senate in plenary; but, in avolte-face, he<\/div>\n
had proceeded to file a suit against the Senate President, Dr.Bukola<\/div>\n
Saraki and the Senate when he got winds that the Ethics and Privileges<\/div>\n
Committeehad recommended him for suspension from legislative activities<\/div>\n
for 180 days.But theSenate, considering the plea by Saraki, decided to<\/div>\n
reduce the 180-daysuspension by a half to 90 days. This, according to the<\/div>\n
Senate, was to serve asdeterrent to other senators who might contemplate<\/div>\n
taking the Senate to courtover its powers to regulate or determine its<\/div>\n
internal affairs.Omo-Agege, insteadof allowing the matter in court to run<\/div>\n
its full course, was beside himself anddecided to resort to that odious<\/div>\n
self-help.\u00a0I wonder what he intended to achieve by that.\u00a0 Will his<\/div>\n
storming the Senate with thugs and disruptingits sitting in a day force a<\/div>\n
reversal of the decision to suspend him? Certainlynot! Instead, it would<\/div>\n
worsen his situation as it has done.Did he thinkthat the attack on that<\/div>\n
particular Mace could have prevented a replacement withanother Mace?<\/div>\n
There are so many Maces inthe custody of the Sergeant-at-Arms that could<\/div>\n
serve as replacement. I justcannot understand what Omo-Agege, a supposed<\/div>\n
gentleman, wanted to achieve.\u00a0 It is sad that a senator of the Federal<\/div>\n
Republicof Nigeria lost his sense of equanimity when it mattered most and<\/div>\n
ended upbeing a misguided role model.He is an unfortunateproxy in a<\/div>\n
seeming battle in defence of the electoral interest of the President.\u00a0 If<\/div>\n
the motivation for the show of shame wasto ingratiate himself to the<\/div>\n
Presidency in the battle for 2019 tickets of theAPC, then beyond being an<\/div>\n
unenviable role model and unfortunate proxy, he is a reprehensibletragic<\/div>\n
hero, putting his reputation and family name at stake.How could anelderly<\/div>\n
man, head of family and father who is supposedly educated descend solow<\/div>\n
into the gutter in a desperate bid to achieve what end that is at<\/div>\n
bestmundane?\u00a0 \u201cA good name,\u201d according to theBible (Proverbs 22.1), \u201cis<\/div>\n
more desirable than great riches and a loving favourrather than silver and<\/div>\n
gold.\u201d By thattreasonable act of attacking the authority of a revered<\/div>\n
democratic institutionof the Senate of which he is a part even though<\/div>\n
suspended for 90 days, Omo-Agegeis nothing but a felon and should be<\/div>\n
appropriately dealt with in accordance. Hehas lost his respect as a<\/div>\n
senator in the estimation of well-meaning Nigerians.I watched ashe was<\/div>\n
being led away by two very senior Police officers into the back seat ofa<\/div>\n
waiting Hilux van and driven away amid the blaring of siren.\u00a0 That was a<\/div>\n
pitiable anti-climax to an actionthat could not escape essential<\/div>\n
indictment as jejune.\u00a0 The Omo-Agege saga is a reminder of another<\/div>\n
similarincident that another politician from Delta State choreographed in<\/div>\n
2015 at theInternational Conference Centre where the result of the<\/div>\n
presidential electionwas being collated.\u00a0 I refer to formerMinister of<\/div>\n
Niger Delta, Elder Peter Godsday Orubebe, who was the agent ofPresident<\/div>\n
Goodluck Jonathan where the results of the presidential electionswere<\/div>\n
being announced. At a point, on March 15, 2015, Orubebe went<\/div>\n
overboard,seized the microphone and for several minutes, insisted that the<\/div>\n
INEC Chairman,Professor Attahiru Jega, should leave the centre because,<\/div>\n
according to him, hewas biased against the ruling PDP. Openlyaccusing Jega<\/div>\n
of being \u201ctribalistic and partial\u201d, he said the INEC chairman<\/div>\n
actedpromptly on the complaints from the opposition APC but refused to<\/div>\n
accept apetition from the PDP. Although that did not deter Jega from<\/div>\n
seeing through hisassignment, the Orubebe rascality that could have<\/div>\n
encouraged a rejection of thepresidential election result by the PDP was<\/div>\n
eventually put down by GoodluckJonathan\u2019s decision to, without consulting<\/div>\n
his party leaders, accept the resultof the election in a historic<\/div>\n
telephone call to Muhammadu Buhari.\u00a0 That was even when two states were<\/div>\n
yet to beannounced by the INEC.I have drawnthis comparison in order to<\/div>\n
question what the problem is with politicians fromDelta State that<\/div>\n
accentuates their rascality.\u00a0Well, it may not be solely peculiar to Delta,<\/div>\n
but the people of thestate should begin to interrogate the antecedents and<\/div>\n
psychologies of thosethey vote in as their representatives in the National<\/div>\n
Assembly as from 2019. Other statesshould follow suit.\u00a0 It is unfortunate<\/div>\n
thatOmo-Agege found himself on the wrong side of the authority in the<\/div>\n
Senate;otherwise, this side of him would not have been known.\u00a0 His<\/div>\n
colleague, Dino Melaye, from Kogi State,obviously has more capacity and<\/div>\n
multiple competencies for mischief thanOmo-Agege, but he is on the right<\/div>\n
side of the Senate authority and he is beingmollycoddled; his nuisance<\/div>\n
values tolerated and deployed to utilitarian advantage.\u00a0 I rememberwhen<\/div>\n
Dino Melaye was a member of the House of Representatives, he fought on<\/div>\n
thefloor of the House and had his dress torn into rags in defence of the<\/div>\n
thenHouse leadership under the Speakership of Hon. Patricia Etteh.\u00a0 There<\/div>\n
were others who had, in the past,thrown decency to the wind and fought one<\/div>\n
another on the floor of the House.\u00a0 Because of theyouthfulness of the<\/div>\n
preponderant members of the House, they were and are stillalways eager to<\/div>\n
flex muscles and actually deliver the punches. But the Senateambience is<\/div>\n
different.\u00a0 While senatorsare not giving to fighting, they are at home<\/div>\n
exchanging banter.\u00a0 Historically, senators\u2019 action of personally<\/div>\n
hijackingthe Mace is not new to us, but the dimension that Omo-Agege has<\/div>\n
justintroduced, sponsoring thugs to invade the chamber in plenary to<\/div>\n
attack andmake away with the symbol of authority is, no doubt, novel.The<\/div>\n
ease atwhich the thugs entered the chamber and grabbed the Mace calls for<\/div>\n
a review ofthe security in and around the chambers of the Senate and the<\/div>\n
House of Representatives.\u00a0 Besides, the legislators\u2019 personal<\/div>\n
securityshould be taken seriously by them as the 2019 politicking for<\/div>\n
elective postsenter into frenzy. Significantly,we should henceforth place<\/div>\n
a demand for proper and respectful conducts from oursenators and spell it<\/div>\n
out to them that whoever perpetrates this sort of Omo-Agege\u2019srascality and<\/div>\n
allied misbehaviours will be recalled. \u00a0In fact, Nigerians in the various<\/div>\n
senatorialzones who know the antecedents of those aspiring to represent<\/div>\n
them, should usetheir votes to screen out the likes of Omo-Agege from<\/div>\n
finding their ways to theSenate in particular and House of Representatives<\/div>\n
and State Houses of Assembly ingeneral.\u00a0 This will help to sanitise the<\/div>\n
legislativearm of government.<\/div>\n
