Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar says if he wins the 2019 election, he
\nwill investigate the arms procurement of the current administration.<\/p>\n
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa on Saturday, Abubakar said it is
\ntaking too long to defeat the Boko Haram insurgents.<\/p>\n
\u201cEight years after, Nigerian government is still fighting Boko Haram that
\nare not professionally trained,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to be the president of Nigeria because I would be able to do
\nthings I could not do as vice president. I will investigate how the
\ngovernment was unable to defeat Boko Haram for years. I will also
\ninvestigate the procurement of arms bought by this administration.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also vowed to tackle corruption, accusing the government of Buhari of
\nprotecting some persons who ought to be prosecuted.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf Nigerians can recall, we initiated the Economic and Financial (Crimes)
\nCommission (EFCC). I\u2019m the person that sourced for the takeoff funds for
\nthe EFCC,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn this administration, there are people who are untouchable, they are
\ndoing things that are not in order but they are being shielded by the
\ngovernment. If elected Nigeria\u2019s president, my administration will not
\nspare anybody. When I was in power, none of my relatives or friends was
\nfound wanting.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said before he left the All Progressives Congress (APC), he warned
\nBuhari that he would quit if the party was not restructured.<\/p>\n
Abubakar resigned his membership of the ruling party in November and
\nreturned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where he served as the
\nnation\u2019s number two citizen for eight years.<\/p>\n
He said after the 2015 election, he met Buhari and advised him on the
\nrunning of his government but that the president failed to heed his
\nwarning or implement his advice.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe APC started on a wrong footing after President Buhari assumed
\noffice,\u201d Abubakar said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter 2015 general election, I met the president and told him the
\nactivities of the party had been crippled and there was a need for
\nrestructuring.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlso, the way the government was being run; I made my suggestions but it
\nseemed they were deemed not important to them. I said to him, if things
\ncontinued like this, I will quit but Buhari\u00a0 ignored it.\u201d<\/p>\n
