President Muhammadu Buhari has assured U.S. President Donald Trump that
\nhis administration is stabilising the attacks by herdsmen across the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
Buhari, who gave the assurance during his meeting with Trump at the White
\nHouse, said Nigerians were concerned about the resort to arms by some
\nherdsmen.<\/p>\n
The Nigerian president described the situation as alien to the age-long
\npeaceful coexistence between herders and farmers across the country.<\/p>\n
Buhari said: \u201cThe problem of cattle herders is a very long historical
\nproblem. What is of a concern is that before now the Nigerian herders are
\nknown to carry sticks and machetes and cut follies for their animals but
\nthese ones are carrying AK 47.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, I don\u2019t think we should underrate Libya, 43 years of Gaddafi people
\nwere being recruited from the Sahel and people were being killed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith the demise, they moved from their country and their region with
\ntheir training and their weapons and that is what aggravated the
\nsituation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are doing our best to make ensure we stop the cross border movement
\nand so on. It will take time. We are Stabilising the situation in
\nNigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n
He explained that Nigeria was happy with the U.S. trying to see the end of
\nISIS, saying this has helped Nigeria a lot because the Boko Haram in
\nNigeria had one time made a statement that they belonged to ISIS.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow that ISIS has been virtually dealt with,\u00a0 we are very happy with
\nthat,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
On security, Buhari said he was very grateful to the U.S. for \u201cagreeing to
\nsell to us the aircraft we asked for and the spare parts\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are even more grateful for the physical presence of the United States
\nmilitary who are training in our institutions and who also go to the front
\nin the northeast to see how they are doing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe commitment of the United States to get rid of terrorism across the
\nworld, we have first hand experience of that and we are very grateful for
\nit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cChibok girls\u2019 kidnap was before we came. We rescue some of them. The
\nDapchi girls were 106, we rescued 100 back, four died, one is still in
\ncaptivity.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are very grateful to the United Nations organisation that is acting as
\ngo-between and is helping out. We have not given up on the Dapchi girl,\u201d
\nBuhari said.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Trump had said he had met Buhari before and they had a great
\nrelationship.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have had very serious problems with Christians who are being murdered
\nin Nigeria, we are going to be working on that problem very, very hard
\nbecause we cannot allow that to happen,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
The U.S. leader said his country had very much decimated ISIS over the
\nlast 12 months.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut Boko Haram has been terrible. How did you do with the young women
\nthat have been kidnapped? It\u2019s a terrible problem,\u201d Trump had said.(NAN)<\/p>\n
