President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday, commended<\/div>\n
the BBC Africa, \u2018Africa Eye\u2019 documentary \u2018Sweet Sweet Codeine\u2019 that<\/div>\n
details the widespread prevalence of drug and substance abuse in Nigeria.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, Saraki stated<\/div>\n
that documentaries like \u2018Sweet Sweet Codeine\u2019 are real-life attestations<\/div>\n
on the need for Nigeria to take its drug abuse problem more seriously.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThe widespread nature of this substance abuse problem in Nigeria is why<\/div>\n
the Senate convened the stakeholder Roundtable in Kano in December,\u201d the<\/div>\n
President of the Senate said, \u201cEven though I have been working on this<\/div>\n
issue for a few months now, watching the BBC documentary was another<\/div>\n
eye-opener. Nigerians can now see that if care is not taken, we could be<\/div>\n
sitting on a catastrophe. We cannot all just fold our arms and expect this<\/div>\n
issue to fix itself. This is everybody’s problem.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cAs things stand, following the Roundtable on Drug Abuse that held in Kano<\/div>\n
in December 2017, we have already developed a draft Legislative framework<\/div>\n
for the control of narcotics and psychotropic substances and the provision<\/div>\n
of mental health and substance abuse services in Nigeria.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWith the Drug Control Bill that we are set to introduce, the mandate of<\/div>\n
the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Agency<\/div>\n
for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) and other relevant law<\/div>\n
enforcement and other regulatory bodies will be strengthened to eradicate<\/div>\n
the illicit production, and trafficking of controlled substances.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWhile the Mental Health Bill will ensure the availability of mental<\/div>\n
health and substance abuse services in every state, as well as guarantee<\/div>\n
the enforcement of minimum standards of care for people with mental health<\/div>\n
disorders.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThis is because, we cannot continue like this. We cannot continue to have<\/div>\n
one psychiatrist for every 1.6million Nigerians and expect this substance<\/div>\n
abuse problem to go away. This legislative framework that we are preparing<\/div>\n
recognizes the low number of mental health practitioners in the country,<\/div>\n
and works to rectify that problem by ensuring that quality mental health<\/div>\n
and substance abuse services are available for this underserved segment of<\/div>\n
the population.\u201d<\/div>\n
