Former vice-president and presidential aspirant, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has
\ndescribed the current composition of the second schedule of Nigeria’s
\nconstitution as not development driven.<\/p>\n

Alhaji Atiku made this declaration while speaking with journalists on the
\nsidelines of the 10th anniversary symposium of Late Sen. Abraham Adesanya
\nheld at the Muson Center, Lagos\u00a0on Wednesday<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Speaking on his advocacy for a proper restructuring of Nigeria, the former
\nvice-president noted that his approach towards achieving the restructuring
\nagenda will be to review the contents of the Exclusive, Concurrent and
\nResidual lists.<\/p>\n

According to him: “I have had people come to me to ask how I intend to
\nachieve the restructuring agenda\u00a0in six months<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and my answer to them all is
\nthat the process is not a rocket science.<\/p>\n

“A serious minded government that knows how to listen and build consensus
\ncan restructure Nigeria for the benefit of all and this I undertake to do
\nwhen I become the president. Some politicians will tell you it is a
\ndaunting task but the reality is that they are not really sincere and
\ncommitted to ensuring its actualization. They play lots of politics with it
\nand when agitations box them to a corner, they setup smokescreen
\ncommittees.<\/p>\n

“It’s all about the willpower which many will agree I possess in abundance.<\/p>\n

“Indeed the federal government can voluntarily withdraw from most of the
\nitems listed in the exclusive lists of our constitution. I believe that the
\nbenefits accruing from these first steps will help us as we move towards
\nthe changes that require amendments to our constitution.<\/p>\n

“The major task is recomposing the second schedule which does not encourage
\ndevelopment and when you enjoy a cordial relationship with the National
\nAssembly and see it as an independent partner in progress rather than as a
\ncompetitor, you can achieve great things,” he said.<\/p>\n

The anniversary was attended by former President, Olusegun Obasanjo; former
\nHead of State and Chairman of the occasion, General Abdulsalami Abubakar;
\nformer Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; former Secretary
\nGeneral of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku; Dr (Mrs) Doyinsola
\nAbiola, amongst many other dignitaries.<\/p>\n
