In response to the brazen invasion of the Rivers State High Court Complex<\/div>\n
by armed thugs of the All Progressive Congress (APC ) backed by operatives<\/div>\n
of the Nigerian Police last Friday, the Rivers State House of Assembly has<\/div>\n
resolved to formally write the United Nations to save the people of the<\/div>\n
state\u00a0 from the hands of the APC Federal Government.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Rivers State House of Assembly also resolved to write the European<\/div>\n
Union and the Commonwealth of Nations to take immediate steps to ensure<\/div>\n
the safety of Rivers people in the face of premeditated assault by the APC<\/div>\n
Federal Government and her agents.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
At an emergency\u00a0 session on Monday, the Rivers State House of Assembly<\/div>\n
also resolved to write the President and Commander-in-chief with a view<\/div>\n
to calling him to immediate action on the evils being perpetrated against<\/div>\n
Rivers people by his administration.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani<\/div>\n
who presided over the sitting placed the motion moved\u00a0 by the Majority<\/div>\n
Leader, Mr Martins Amaehwule before members for voting.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Sixteen members voted in favour of the motion, while three voted against<\/div>\n
and another three members abstained\u00a0 from voting.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The resolution followed a motion moved by the Leader of the House and<\/div>\n
member representing Obio\/Akpor State Constituency One, Martin Chike<\/div>\n
Amaewhule under matter of urgent importance condemning the attack and<\/div>\n
closure of the Rivers State High Court Complex on the 11th of May, 2018<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The motion was seconded by the member representing Bonny State<\/div>\n
Constituency, Abiye Pepple.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Moving the Mr. Martin Amaewhule drew the attention of members of the House<\/div>\n
on the incident of 11th May, 2018 where both uniformed\u00a0 and non-uniformed<\/div>\n
armed men attacked the State High Court Complex in a commando-style with<\/div>\n
sporadic gunshot, shut down the complex by locking the entrance gates,<\/div>\n
destroyed government and private property and molested judicial officers,<\/div>\n
lawyers and litigants.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Leader of the House who stated that the cause of the crisis was an<\/div>\n
impending ruling on a matter between two disputing parties of the All<\/div>\n
Progressives Congress, APC noted with sadness that no arrest has been made<\/div>\n
even when sponsored hoodlums were seen attacking people and destroying<\/div>\n
vehicles and infrastructure at the High Court Complex in the presence of<\/div>\n
the APC-controlled Federal Anti-Robbery Squad, FSARS.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He observed that the safety of the Rivers State Governor can no longer be<\/div>\n
guaranteed as the Federal Government whose responsibility it is to control<\/div>\n
the police has now delegated the power of control of the Rivers State<\/div>\n
Police Command and particularly FSARS to the leader of Rivers APC.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In his contribution, Minority Leader, Benibo Anabrabra regretted that<\/div>\n
members of his political party desecrated the temple of justice.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr Marshall Uwom<\/div>\n
said it is expedient to defend the rule of law and democracy\u00a0 in the<\/div>\n
state.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Member, representing Ahoada East Constituency 2, Mr Ehie Edison while<\/div>\n
condemning\u00a0 the invasion, said that acts of this nature must be met with<\/div>\n
sanctions.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Member representing Asari-Toru State Constituency Two, Emeni George who<\/div>\n
described as sacrilegious the desecration of the\u00a0 State Temple of Justice<\/div>\n
urged the President to sack the Inspector General of Police for<\/div>\n
incompetence.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Majority Whip, Evans Bipi said the attack on the State High Court Complex<\/div>\n
is geared towards 2019 elections and urged the House to also write to all<\/div>\n
embassies in Nigeria.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Ruling on the matter, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Right<\/div>\n
Honourable Ikuinyi Owaji-Ibani said the position of the house is to save<\/div>\n
the state from the illegal acts of the APC Federal Government.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said\u00a0 the attack on the judiciary which is the last hope of the common<\/div>\n
man is a sad narrative for the state and her corporate existence.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The House of Assembly later moved to the State High Court Complex where<\/div>\n
they inspected the damage done by the APC and the Nigerian Police. The<\/div>\n
Chief Judge of Rivers State conducted the State Lawmakers round.<\/div>\n
