Despite its magnificence, democracy has its limits.One of its major<\/div>\n
drawbacks is that it does not guarantee the election of good leaders;it<\/div>\n
only makes possible the removal of bad leaders. President Mohammadu Buhari<\/div>\n
isa bad president. His administration is wobbling under its own weight of<\/div>\n
ineptitude,corruption, ethnic chauvinism and religious zealotry. His<\/div>\n
presidency hasbrought untold social and economic disruption to the<\/div>\n
country. It left Nigeriansreeling from hitherto unknown levels of poverty,<\/div>\n
economic hardship, insecurityand ethnic violence. Refreshingly, the<\/div>\n
problems the Buhari presidency isvisiting on Nigeria will hopefully not<\/div>\n
continue beyond 2019, because Nigerians areconstitutionally empowered to<\/div>\n
put an end to his presidency.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In spite of his bungled leadership, Mohammed Buhari recentlydeclared his<\/div>\n
intention to seek re-election to another four year term. In hisresponse to<\/div>\n
this, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State was lyrical. He called it\u201ca<\/div>\n
patriotic response to the clarion call of Nigerians of goodwill for him<\/div>\n
tolead the country for another four years\u201d. Governor Shettima of Borno<\/div>\n
State alsoenthused, \u201che has done the right thing; he is going to contest<\/div>\n
and we are solidlybehind him\u201d The effusive approval of Buhari\u2019s<\/div>\n
re-election bid by GovernorsOkorocha and Shettima is not, in any way, in<\/div>\n
line with the prevailing sentimentsamongst Nigerians. Sheltered in their<\/div>\n
cocoons of opulence, self-indulgence andprofligacy, they refuse to<\/div>\n
acknowledge an incontrovertible reality: the Buhari presidencyis terrible<\/div>\n
for Nigeria.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Buhariwas swept into power by a groundswell of electoral support almost<\/div>\n
unparalleledin Nigerian history. Buhari promised the Nigerian electorate<\/div>\n
change, and they believedhim because they thought that he embodied the<\/div>\n
essential qualities that willbring about the desperately needed change:<\/div>\n
the indomitable will of a militarycommander, incorruptible uprightness of<\/div>\n
a moral crusader and the puritanicalcandor of a devout Moslem. Therefore,<\/div>\n
with his election, Nigerians understandably,expected change \u2013 positive,<\/div>\n
progressive and palpable change. Lamentably, Buhari-styledchange is<\/div>\n
negative and retrogressive.<\/div>\n

Nigeriaremains a lawless country: a chaotic country that is probably one<\/div>\n
of the mostunlivable places on earth. The cost of governance remains<\/div>\n
outrageously high,with billons of naira still budgeted for trivialities<\/div>\n
and frivolities that gratify the greed and fantasies of a privileged few.<\/div>\n
Official corruption isstill repulsively rife. At the economic<\/div>\n
strangulation of the masses, the elitecontinue to steal, share and salt<\/div>\n
away billions of dollars. Debilitated bynepotism and cronyism, his war on<\/div>\n
corruption lost its earlier dynamism. Itdegenerated into something of a<\/div>\n
witch-hunt, targeting mostly those in theopposition, \u201cwhile anyone, who<\/div>\n
joins APC (the president\u2019s political party)automatically, becomes a saint<\/div>\n
and is protected to enjoy his loot\u201d. The price ofoil has more than doubled<\/div>\n
in the last three years; increasing from $28 to about$75 and Nigeria is<\/div>\n
ostensibly out of a recession. Still, the economy has notimproved; it<\/div>\n
continues to totter, with inflation spiraling out of control,<\/div>\n
businessescollapsing, unemployment dangerously high, and the masses<\/div>\n
increasingly burdenedwith crushing poverty.<\/div>\n

Theability of the federal government to protect lives and property keeps<\/div>\n
eroding;the Fulani herdsmen mass-murder of the innocent and hapless in the<\/div>\n
Middle Beltis scrapping to genocide.\u00a0 The conflictbetween farmers and<\/div>\n
herdsmen is inherent, and, as a result, the fight betweenthem has<\/div>\n
persisted from time immemorial. But this ordinarily commonplace<\/div>\n
quarreltook a ghoulish \u00a0twist since Buharibecame the president of Nigeria.<\/div>\n
The clashes between then went beyond theusually struggle over farm land<\/div>\n
and grazing routes to \u201clow intensity genocide\u201d.In the past, the rival<\/div>\n
groups fought with machetes and bludgeons. But thesedays Fulani herdsmen<\/div>\n
attack farming communities with assault rifles. They kill offand raze<\/div>\n
entire villages. They rampage through these communities, mostly atnight,<\/div>\n
maiming and killing defenseless men, women and children, raping<\/div>\n
women,torching homes and destroying villages. The herdsmen\u2019s murderous<\/div>\n
lunacy is notjust about securing grazing routes and space for their<\/div>\n
cattle; it belies an ulterioragenda.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Fulaniherdsmen are the foot soldiers of wealthy and powerful cattle<\/div>\n
owners, whoseumbrella association is Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders<\/div>\n
Association of Nigeria. Theaverage Fulani herdsman lacks the resources to<\/div>\n
acquire sophisticated assaultrifles. He is invariably armed and assigned<\/div>\n
on his gruesome mission by his mastersin the Miyetti Allah. Buhari is<\/div>\n
Fulani and a member of the Miyetti Allah. Inhis unremitting nepotism, he<\/div>\n
is sentimentally attachment to his Fulani kinsmen,the Miyetti Allah, its<\/div>\n
armed terrorists, and their macabre agendas in theMiddle Belt. Not<\/div>\n
surprisingly, his administration has turned a blind eye to theatrocities<\/div>\n
of Fulani terrorists. It refuses to rein-in the bloodthirsty<\/div>\n
herdsmen,protect the farming communities, and prosecute culpable herdsmen<\/div>\n
and theirsuspected sponsors. As the number of the dead, maimed and raped;<\/div>\n
burnt-downvillages; and displaced persons from the herdsmen\u2019s murderous<\/div>\n
binges continueto mount; President Buhari and his security chiefs<\/div>\n
vacillate and equivocate.<\/div>\n

Likeirredeemably bad rulers, Buhari has a penchant for blaming others for<\/div>\n
hisblunders. \u00a0After three years in office, hisadministration still blames<\/div>\n
the Jonathan administration for the country\u2019seconomic miseries. As for his<\/div>\n
failure to contain the brutal menace of Fulaniherdsmen, he blamed armed<\/div>\n
terrorists from Libya. For the mediocre achievements ofhis war on<\/div>\n
corruption, he blames the judiciary and the constitutional guaranteesof<\/div>\n
citizens\u2019 immunity from dictatorial acts of governing officials. After<\/div>\n
threeyears of Buhari presidency, Nigerians are disappointed, dispirited<\/div>\n
anddisenchanted. In response to Buhari\u2019s declaration for re-election, the<\/div>\n
Coalitionof Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) stated, \u201cThe president\u2019s<\/div>\n
declaration ofintension to run is the height of insensitivity to the<\/div>\n
plight of Nigerians whoare suffering under his administration\u201d. It is a<\/div>\n
statement wholly in consonant withthe popular sentiment in Nigerian.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Encouragingly,Nigerians reserve the constitutional right to remove<\/div>\n
President Buhari. We mustexercise this constitutional prerogative in 2019,<\/div>\n
and vote him out because the re-electionof Buhari would, in the words of<\/div>\n
the Archbishop Emmanuel Chukwuma, \u201cperpetuatesuffering and evil\u201d.<\/div>\n
