President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Nigerians to keep faith with the<\/div>\n
current administration as it remains committed to the tenets of good<\/div>\n
governance.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The President made the call at the 2018 Democracy Day lecture, held on<\/div>\n
Monday at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
While reflecting on the achievements of the APC-led Federal Government in<\/div>\n
the last three years, the president said his administration was working<\/div>\n
hard to deliver more democratic dividends to citizens.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cOverall we are on track. I thank all and commend all who have worked so<\/div>\n
far with us to achieve these successes.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI assure you that our people will continue to see and experience more<\/div>\n
progress, more prosperity and greater security.\u2019\u2019<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He called on Nigerians to remain steadfast and keep faith with this<\/div>\n
administration as it remained committed to peace building, good governance<\/div>\n
and the delivery of the best dividends of democracy to the Nigerian<\/div>\n
people.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Buhari noted that the country has had its rough times but maintained that<\/div>\n
the government would not allow itself to be overwhelmed.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to him, the Federal Government has taken the needed steps to<\/div>\n
sustain peace in all parts of the country affected by various crises.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said: \u201cWe have engaged in several rounds of dialogue and town hall<\/div>\n
meetings, targeted at peace building between aggrieved persons and<\/div>\n
communities.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWe have worked hard to decimate insurgents in various parts of the<\/div>\n
country.\u2019\u2019<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The President, who sympathised with people affected by insurgency and<\/div>\n
communal clashes across the country, said the rebuilding of the North-east<\/div>\n
was on-going, saying this would enable displaced persons to return to<\/div>\n
their respective abodes.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He also reiterated the determination of his administration to fight<\/div>\n
corruption to a standstill in order to achieve meaningful development.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cOur resolve to fight corruption was informed by the realization that<\/div>\n
reducing corruption and ensuring the effective and just utilisation of<\/div>\n
public resources are crucial for achieving sustainable growth and<\/div>\n
development in Nigeria.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cCorruption has been at the root of most of the development challenges of<\/div>\n
our country.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThere can be no progress in any facet of our national life unless we<\/div>\n
tackle and curb corruption.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cCorruption manifests itself in several forms, including accelerating<\/div>\n
poverty, conflicts and civil disturbances, resulting into violence and<\/div>\n
destruction; therefore, all must be done to stop it.\u2019\u2019<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He further reiterated that his administration would not relent in its<\/div>\n
efforts to eliminate the menace of corruption in spite of the strong<\/div>\n
opposition against such moves form some quarters.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He noted that Nigeria\u2019s security situation had greatly improved against<\/div>\n
the background of what the current government inherited in 2015.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The president said: \u201cIncidences of bombings in towns and villages have<\/div>\n
been drastically curtailed; series of plots have been averted with many<\/div>\n
culprits arrested through the vigilance, patriotism and professionalism of<\/div>\n
security agencies.\u2019\u2019<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He therefore restated government\u2019s determination to continue to equip<\/div>\n
troops to confront agents of violence until total victory was attained.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Buhari also noted that the economy had continued to improve with<\/div>\n
government achieving its objectives, some of which he listed to include<\/div>\n
increased food production and food security and rapid economic<\/div>\n
diversification.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He also observed with delight that the country\u2019s foreign reserves had<\/div>\n
reached new heights.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The President, who reflected on events leading to the conduct and<\/div>\n
announcement of results of the 2015 general elections, `queried\u2019<\/div>\n
organisers of the programme for not inviting former Minister of Niger<\/div>\n
Delta Affairs, Mr Godsday Orubebe to the event.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said his invitation would have afforded him the opportunity to listen<\/div>\n
to Prof. Mahmud Jega\u2019s lecture on good governance.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cHere I must digress to raise an observation by (to) the programme\u2019s<\/div>\n
organisers because I did not see Mr Orubebe who ought to have come and<\/div>\n
listened to Prof. Jega delivering this lecture.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThis is a major observation. For those of us, who were lucky that there<\/div>\n
was light and we have the television to see the confrontation between Mr<\/div>\n
Orubebe and Prof. Jega, that instant made a life impression in some of us.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
