The federal government on Thursday in Abuja berated the opposition for<\/div>\n
\u201cthrowing spurious allegation\u2019\u2019 that N10 trillion has been looted under<\/div>\n
the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said such false<\/div>\n
allegation could only come from \u201can opposition that is unserious, very<\/div>\n
disdainful of the truth and lacks ideas\u2019.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The PDP, on Monday, asked the Presidency to address Nigerians on the<\/div>\n
leaked Memo detailing corrupt oil contracts to the tune of N9 trillion<\/div>\n
($25billion dollars) at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)<\/div>\n
and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, which are under President<\/div>\n
Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s direct supervision as Minister of Petroleum Resources.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Speaking at the inauguration of the Governing Council of Nigeria Institute<\/div>\n
of Public Relations (NIPR), the minister said \u201cthey (opposition)<\/div>\n
erroneously believed that being in opposition means crying wolf where<\/div>\n
there is none\u2019\u2019.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThey spew out fake information at the speed of light!<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWhere is the seriousness in an opposition party throwing out a spurious<\/div>\n
figure of N10 trillion as the amount of money that has been looted under<\/div>\n
the present administration?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWhat is Nigeria\u2019s annual national budget?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cHow do you react to an opposition that is deliberately perpetually blind<\/div>\n
to the monumental achievements of this administration?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cAs I said at a press conference recently, this administration has<\/div>\n
recorded a number of unprecedented achievements, seen and acknowledged by<\/div>\n
Nigerians who have benefitted from them.\u2019\u2019<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mr Mohammed said the Buhari administration which inherited 2,690 megawatts<\/div>\n
of power, had taken it to 7,000MW.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said the government had taken Nigeria closer to self-sufficiency in<\/div>\n
rice than any administration before them.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWe are just two years away from meeting our target production of six<\/div>\n
million MT of milled rice, which is Nigeria\u2019s total rice consumption.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWe increased the number of rice farmers from five million to an all-time<\/div>\n
high over 11 million, and we have cut Nigeria\u2019s rice import bill of 1.65<\/div>\n
billion dollar annually by 90 per cent the highest such cut ever,\u2019\u2019 he<\/div>\n
said<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to the minister, the administration is feeding 8.2 million<\/div>\n
pupils in 45,394 schools in 24 states, and employing 87,261 cooks.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said the government is paying conditional cash transfer of N5,000<\/div>\n
monthly to 297,973 poorest and most vulnerable households, never before<\/div>\n
done in Nigeria.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWe are building roads, rail and power, spending an unprecedented N2.7<\/div>\n
trillion on infrastructure alone in just two years and we have raised<\/div>\n
capital expenditure in the yearly national budget to an unprecedented 30<\/div>\n
per cent.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cOn the average, our Social Investment Programmes have benefitted nine<\/div>\n
million people, either in N-POWER, GEEP, Home-Grown School Feeding<\/div>\n
Programme or Conditional Cash Transfer.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mr Mohammed said the government had retaken every inch of Nigeria\u2019s<\/div>\n
territory from insurgents, adding that the economy was also back on the<\/div>\n
path of growth, after the recession of 2016-2017.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The minister, who supported his assertions with figures, said Nigeria<\/div>\n
moved up 24 places on the World Bank\u2019s Ease of Doing Business rankings in<\/div>\n
2017, and was listed among the 10 most improved economies.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWe are fighting corruption like never before, with our Whistle Blowing<\/div>\n
Policy yielding N13.8 billion from tax evaders, as well as N7.8 billion,<\/div>\n
378 million dollars, 27,800 Pounds recoveries from public officials.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWe are also combating the security challenges facing the country, either<\/div>\n
in the North-east, the North-central or elsewhere,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The minister said that while naysayers said they had not seen all the<\/div>\n
achievements, Nigerians who were benefitting directly from them had<\/div>\n
testified to the reality of the successes.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The minister charged public relations practitioners, whether working for<\/div>\n
government or not, never to be tired of projecting the image of their<\/div>\n
establishments, even when some people decided to play the blind or the<\/div>\n
spoiler.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said they must never be discouraged or allow themselves to be<\/div>\n
disenchanted.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mr Mohammed wished members of the newly inaugurated council a successful<\/div>\n
tenure.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mukhtar Sirajo, the new President of NIPR and its Council Chairman thanked<\/div>\n
the minister for finding time to attend the ceremony and inaugurating the<\/div>\n
council.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He corroborated the minister\u2019s position that one of the major challenges<\/div>\n
facing the nation was the attempt by unpatriotic political actors to drum<\/div>\n
up phantom fault lines to divide the nation.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mr Sirajo advised the government to widen the space for dialogue, adding<\/div>\n
that the NIPR would support the government in that regard by establishing<\/div>\n
a quarterly Public Relations Summit to discuss issues on the nation\u2019s<\/div>\n
corporate existence.<\/div>\n
