{"id":62464,"date":"2018-06-01T21:20:34","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T20:20:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=62464"},"modified":"2018-06-01T21:20:34","modified_gmt":"2018-06-01T20:20:34","slug":"pdp-raises-alarm-over-media-trial-of-opposition-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/pdp-raises-alarm-over-media-trial-of-opposition-members\/","title":{"rendered":"PDP Raises Alarm Over Media Trial of Opposition Members"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the unrelenting media<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">trial and persecution of opposition members and other perceived<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">political opponents of the All Progressives Congress (APC), under the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">guise of fight against corruption.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The Opposition Party said its members are being detained and constantly<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">harassed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on trumped<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">up charges by the Government.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">A Statement signed by the PDP Spokesman, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan reads:<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Whereas the PDP is in no way opposed to the fight against corruption, we<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">are completely against government\u2019s resort to media trial, constant<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">harassment, unlawful detention and trumped up charges against opposition<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">members, using various agencies, particularly, the Economic and<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The PDP particularly rejects the emerging trend by the EFCC, wherein<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">accused persons and individuals who are still under investigation on<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">alleged corruption charges are paraded and forced to hang criminal tags,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">as meted out to former Kaduna State Governor Muktar Yero, even when such<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">persons have not been convicted by any court of competent jurisdiction.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The PDP is totally against the desperation by the EFCC, working under<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">the instruction of the APC, to declare a guilty verdict on accused<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">persons without trial by the courts, all in the bid to bring perceived<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">political opponents to public odium and emasculate the opposition ahead<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">of 2019 general elections.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The PDP also rejects the direct interferences in on-going cases,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">including those in court, by appointees of President Muhammadu Buhari,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">particularly, members of the Presidential Advisory Committee on<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Corruption, whose comments and actions have continued to escalate media<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">trials and other irregularities in the handling of such cases.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The PDP insists, in very unequivocal terms, that we can no longer<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">continue to stomach the hijacking of the duties of the judiciary by<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">agencies of the executive under the instructions of the Presidency.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Nigerians will recall that the PDP had earlier raised the alarm over<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">this unrelenting assault, harassment and persecution of opposition<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">members under the guise of fight against corruption.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;This reckless abuse and violation of procedures of the law by the APC is<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">a clear recipe for civil unrest in our nation, if it does not stop.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The fight against corruption must be prosecuted within the ambits of the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">provisions of the law and not as an instrument of persecution and<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">clampdown against the opposition.
