Stakeholders of Yenagoa Local Government Area in Bayelsa State\u00a0on Monday<\/span><\/span>
\nthrew their weight behind the Governor Seriake Dickson-led
\nadministration’s public service reforms describing the ongoing
\nrestructuring process as the only option out of the rot that had held down
\nthe state over the years.<\/p>\n

Rising from a town hall meeting\u00a0on Monday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0at the Gabriel Okara Cultural
\nCenter, Yenagoa, the people comprising traditional rulers, political
\nappointees, women, youth and student groups also lauded the governor for
\ndirecting the employment of 1,000 workers into the state public service.<\/p>\n

They however urged the state government to put in place measures that
\nwould ensure transparency and fairness in the recruitment process.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the well attended event, the Ibenanaowei of Gbarain Kingdom,
\nKing Funpere Akah, said all traditional rulers in the state were already
\nin support of the restructuring in view of the far-reaching benefits the
\nreforms hold for the state.<\/p>\n

King Akah who doubles as the Chairman of Traditional Rulers in the Yenagoa
\nArea, urged the royal fathers to explain the essence of the reforms to
\ntheir people for their support.<\/p>\n

He urged the monarchs to prevail on their subjects who had got to the age
\nof retirement to pull out of the civil service to pave the way for a new
\ngeneration of vibrant Bayelsa youths to take over from them.<\/p>\n

The monarch also called on government to intensify efforts that would lead
\nto the establishment of companies for employment.<\/p>\n

He advised the government to look inwards in the implementation of the
\nreforms, stressing that most of the fraudulent acts in the services are
\nperpetrated by top operatives in government.<\/p>\n

In his remarks , Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Daniel
\nIworiso-Markson, who convened the meeting assured Bayelsans of the
\ndetermination of the government to ensure adherence to impartiality and
\nfairness in the recruitment exercise.<\/p>\n

He explained that government had already put machinery in place to ensure
\nthat only qualified and competent applicants are employed into the service
\nin line with the present administration’s determination to promote
\nefficiency and productivity in the public service.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the importance of the restructuring, Mr Iworiso-Markson
\nfurther reiterated the governor\u2019s position that no genuine worker would be
\nadversely affected in the implementation of reforms.<\/p>\n

He noted out that Bayelsa which was at a point seen as a pariah state, was
\nnow being respected both within and outside the country owing to the
\nresponsible and purposeful leadership style of the restoration government.<\/p>\n

Describing development as a collective responsibility, the information
\nCommissioner maintained that though Bayelsa was yet to attain it’s
\nrightful position in the country, most of the Dickson Administration’s
\npolicies and programmes were being replicated in some states.<\/p>\n

Mr Markson who commended the Yenagoa people for their show of maturity and
\norderliness all through the programme, asked traditional rulers and other
\nleaders to continue the sensitization campaign in their various
\ncommunities to achieve maximum victory over payroll fraud and other sharp
\npractices in the public service.<\/p>\n

Also speaking, the Odukali of Epie, Chief Godwin Odumgba described the
\nongoing reforms as long overdue, noting that the state public service
\nwould not have found itself in its current poor state if previous
\ngovernments had not been passing the buck.<\/p>\n

Chief Odumgba who commended Governor Dickson for mustering political will
\nand courage to implement the reform agenda, however advised government to
\ndrive the process in such manner that would result in a win-win situation.<\/p>\n

Speaking on behalf of women of the area, the Secretary, YELGA Aborigines
\nof Female Chiefs, Chief (Mrs) Ruth Okomi lamented the rate of unemployment
\nand its effects on the state and called on workers who are overdue for
\nretirement to bow out of service in the interest of the youths.<\/p>\n

In their separate presentations, the Vice President, Bayelsa Unemployed
\nGraduates Forum, Mr Agada Jasper Jimmy and President of the National Union
\nof Yenagoa Local Government Students, Miss Ebinipre Ahoada, declared the
\nreadiness of their respective groups to support the reforms all the way.<\/p>\n
