This years\u2019 celebration<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">according to a statement by the Bank would be the 9th since the UN General<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Assembly declared June World Sickle Cell Day in 2008.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Speaking at the press briefing in Lagos, Head, Human Resources<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Recruitment\/CSR and Sustainability, Fidelity Bank, Chris Nnakwe, explained<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">that EBanking Division of the Bank worked with the Coalition of Sickle<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Cell NGOs in Nigeria to undertake its first Corporate Social<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Responsibility (CSR) initiative through the Fidelity Helping Hands<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Programme. This initiative will be powered by Fidelity (QR) mVisa.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Nnakwe regretted that about 150,000 children that are born with sickle<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">cell disorder annually in Nigeria, 75% of them do not live to see their<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">5th birthday, adding that the situation calls for more collaboration for<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">awareness and enlightenment. He noted that the lender\u2019s Helping Hands<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">initiative, which is part of its corporate social responsibility goes<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">beyond building structures but creating awareness to promote healthy<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">living among Nigerians.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe intend to be part this journey of reducing the number of people living<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">with sickle cell through awareness and education. We want to make it an<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">annual event and every year we will see how to get involved as part of our<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">contribution for healthy living in the country,\u201d.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The Chairperson of the Coalition, Toyin Adeola commended Fidelity Bank for<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">the partnership and asked other corporate organisation to emulate the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">gesture of the bank. Adeola noted that the Coalition of the NGO\u2019s in<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Nigeria as a joint activity is organizing, the \u2018Red Umbrella Walk\u2019<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">scheduled to hold on June 16 in Lagos to create awareness about Sickle<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Cell Day at the community level.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\u201cOur goal going forward is to improve the quality of life of people with<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">sickle cell disorder in Nigeria and increase their average life expectancy<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">from less than 20 years to what obtains among the affected persons in the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">US. which is 60 years and even surpass it. This can only happen if all<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">hands are on deck, with governments working in concert alongside the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">private sector, NGOs and communities across the country\u201d.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The United Nations declared World Sickle Cell Day as a day set aside to<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">create more awareness and advocacy for people living with the disorder and<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">educate the public on the dangers of stigma associated with the disorder.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The Coalition has constantly advocated the need for better coordinated<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">effort towards control of SCD by the government at all levels and other<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">concerned stakeholders.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Fidelity Ebanking are adding their voice to the cause through the \u201cRed<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Umbrella walk\u201d which is a one-on-one street awareness walk around the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Surulere area.
