The question of whether Karl Marx was right or not in his contemplation<\/div>\n
that capitalism contains the seed of its own destruction is subject either<\/div>\n
way to the dialectics of conversation, logic and ramification, especially<\/div>\n
against the backdrop of a writ large summation that underpins the global<\/div>\n
expansionist tendency of the capitalist governance ideology.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Whilst historical developments have, so far, confirmed the increasing<\/div>\n
domination of the ideological system, thus resolving the question in the<\/div>\n
negative, there is a profound sense in which it can be surmised that<\/div>\n
laissez-faire approach by operatives at the commanding heights of the<\/div>\n
capitalist system, which vitiates the elite consensus to gradually admit<\/div>\n
revolutionary leaders into its fold, can destabilize the polity and actuate<\/div>\n
the process of revolution, that will conversely answer the question in the<\/div>\n
positive.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Writing in a preface to \u201cThe Contribution to the Critique of Political<\/div>\n
Economy\u201d Marx posited: \u201cno social order ever disappears before all the<\/div>\n
productive forces for which there is room in it have been developed; and<\/div>\n
new higher relations of production never appear before the material<\/div>\n
conditions of their existence have matured in the womb of the old society<\/div>\n
itself. Therefore, mankind always sets itself only such tasks as it can<\/div>\n
solve; since looking at the matter more closely, we always find that the<\/div>\n
task itself arises only when the material conditions necessary for its<\/div>\n
solution already exist, or are at least in the process of formation.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It is in the context of the analogy supra that the tension of the<\/div>\n
problematic demand by the new Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) within the<\/div>\n
bigger and larger legacy party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), for<\/div>\n
fairness and justice in political accommodation and appointments, is hereby<\/div>\n
interrogated. The Yoruba have a proverb that says: \u201cbi ina ko ba tan li<\/div>\n
ori, eje ki itan li eekan\u201d, transliterated: \u201cif lice are still in the hair<\/div>\n
on the head, blood stains will be a common feature on the finger nails.\u201d<\/div>\n
The nPDP members are lice in the hair on APC\u2019s head.\u00a0 The group<\/div>\n
constitutes, as it were, the potential seed of APC\u2019s destruction if its<\/div>\n
capacity for good is not properly nurtured, managed and harvested for<\/div>\n
utilitarian political benefits.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Some leaders of the APC are more likely to disagree with this assessment.<\/div>\n
It is within their right to do so.\u00a0 There is no doubt that the proposition<\/div>\n
is contentious. Former governor of Nasarawa state and senator representing<\/div>\n
Nasarawa West senatorial zone, Abdullahi Adamu, believes that the nPDP is a<\/div>\n
shadow of its old self, shorn of weight, strength and gravitas. A clearer<\/div>\n
understanding of his position will most probably encourage supporters of<\/div>\n
President Buhari in the party to see the nPDP as no longer being a<\/div>\n
monolithic, cohesive, strong and single-minded group as it was when it<\/div>\n
staged the 2014 sensational pullout from the PDP to join in the formation<\/div>\n
of the APC.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
As north central zonal coordinator of the Buhari campaign organisation,<\/div>\n
Adamu leads a critical bloc in the senate and in the party. He is also in a<\/div>\n
position to assess the membership of the resurrected nPDP and what those<\/div>\n
who are promoting it count for in President Buhari\u2019s re-election bid.<\/div>\n
Perhaps, his assessment accounts for his consistent anti-nPDP<\/div>\n
pronouncements.\u00a0 He recently called on the APC leadership to ignore what he<\/div>\n
described as the antics of the group essentially as they were aimed at<\/div>\n
intimidating and blackmailing President Buhari.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
But there seems to be a fresh direction, attitude and rapprochement in the<\/div>\n
offing.\u00a0 New National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole,<\/div>\n
in his acceptance speech after his emergence at the party\u2019s national<\/div>\n
convention in Abuja said that the nPDP would be accommodated within the<\/div>\n
emergent party-government configuration. Oshiomhole spoke magisterially to<\/div>\n
the issue of hard work and reward being commensurate.\u00a0 He assured that his<\/div>\n
leadership would engage with all stakeholders for equitable rewards. That<\/div>\n
is the way to go in any political party that craves the enduring legacies<\/div>\n
of unity and amity.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Oshiomhole knew what he was talking about. The nPDP issue has lingered,<\/div>\n
rendering the party and the presidency tentative.\u00a0 The Chief John<\/div>\n
Odigie-Oyegun leadership, working in concert with the vice president,<\/div>\n
Professor Yemi Osinbajo, had already begun the process of engaging the<\/div>\n
group.\u00a0 However, there have been indications of lack of good faith (bona<\/div>\n
fides) by both sides. There has been arrogant posturing by both sides.<\/div>\n
Oshiomhole advised against arrogance in his speech.\u00a0 Whereas, what is<\/div>\n
needed is forgiveness; it is the understanding of the need to forgive, put<\/div>\n
the acrimonious past behind and forge a new common front on the basis of<\/div>\n
equitable political accommodation that can lead to the success of<\/div>\n
Oshiomhole\u2019s engagement with the Kawu Baraje-led nPDP.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The new APC chairman, judging by his speech to the delegates, including<\/div>\n
President Buhari, and the APC as a political family, appeared committed.<\/div>\n
Since<\/div>\n
he would not want to preside over the disintegration or liquidation of the<\/div>\n
party under his leadership, one can reasonably surmise that his intentions<\/div>\n
going forward with the engagement are genuine.\u00a0 It is with great pains that<\/div>\n
his good faith would be discounted or faulted. This then leaves the nPDP as<\/div>\n
the beautiful bride that must be mollycoddled and pacified.\u00a0 It then means<\/div>\n
that the group should, in the present circumstance, bear the burden of<\/div>\n
questionable good faith.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Given the prejudices and negative sentiments that the leadership of the<\/div>\n
nPDP and its back-end sponsors suffer from as well as the problem of mutual<\/div>\n
distrust between them and the Buhari\/APC leadership, the likely atmosphere<\/div>\n
that will prevail will be that of mutual suspicion and possible<\/div>\n
backstabbing. Can Oshiomhole moderate tempers and cause a shift of grounds<\/div>\n
for amicable resolution of the contending issues? It will take a mind<\/div>\n
reader to know what the stakeholders are contemplating as their final plans.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The strategic moves to halt the pullout of the nPDP by the Oshiomhole<\/div>\n
leadership require the assurance and good faith of the president.\u00a0 The<\/div>\n
president will need to support Oshiomhole, as he did for him to emerge as<\/div>\n
national chairman, to succeed in this critical endeavour.\u00a0 The success of<\/div>\n
the engagement will be salutary to his presidential re-election enterprise.<\/div>\n
Therefore, whatever the terms of the settlement are, good faith requires<\/div>\n
that both parties should show fidelity to them.\u00a0 It should not be a case of<\/div>\n
the president reneging once he has achieved his political and electoral<\/div>\n
objective.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
And as for the nPDP, this process is delicate. The group needs prudence in<\/div>\n
decision taking.\u00a0 If it has confidence in the capacity of the new APC<\/div>\n
leadership to pull it through without reprisals, it may consider staying<\/div>\n
put in the APC and staking its destiny in the emerging topsy-turvy on the<\/div>\n
political terrain in the build-up to the 2019 general election, especially<\/div>\n
the presidential battle. Feelers from the APC indicate that Oshiomhole is<\/div>\n
sincere in his moves to engage with the nPDP.\u00a0 The concern is however with<\/div>\n
the presidency and the nPDP who may insert their wedges in the process and<\/div>\n
render it convoluted and complicated.\u00a0 If the process eventually falls<\/div>\n
through, it will not be that Oshiomhole did not try his best; it will then<\/div>\n
be that the other critical elements approached the reconciliation process<\/div>\n
with bad faith (mala fides). And that will be sad and counter-productive to<\/div>\n
APC\u2019s electoral fortunes.<\/div>\n
