President Muhammadu Buhari\u00a0Thursday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0rallied Christian leaders in the
\ncountry to remain united and shame those stoking the fires of ethnic and
\nreligious conflicts in the country for their short-term political gains.<\/p>\n

Receiving members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) from the
\n19 Northern States and Abuja led by Rev Dr. Yakubu Pam, at the
\nPresidential Villa,\u00a0 \u00a0the President reaffirmed his administration\u2019s
\ncommitment to bring violent conflicts in Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba,
\nZamfara and other flash-points to a decisive end.<\/p>\n

He urged the Christian community to complement government efforts by
\nworking firmly for a united and strong Nigeria.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Government can achieve lasting peace only with the sincere and active
\ncooperation of communities, religious leaders, youths and other
\nstakeholders.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018These include the Media in whose hands lies the power to frame, shape
\nthe perspectives and narratives which influence the thinking of millions
\nof people within and outside Nigeria.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Let us collectively shame those who are stoking the fires of ethnic and
\nreligious conflicts for their short-term political gains.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018This country belongs equally to Christians and Muslims and even those
\nwho claim ignorance of God,\u2019\u2019 the President told the Christian leaders.<\/p>\n

Condemning the recent killings in Benue, Zamfara and lately Plateau, which
\nhe described as \u2018\u2018wicked, condemnable and completely unacceptable acts\u2019\u2019,
\nthe President stressed that Nigerians are religious people and no religion
\nor culture accepts the killing of people for any reason whatsoever.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018This is why we must all rise as one to condemn these vile and wicked
\nacts to ensure that all the culprits are brought to justice<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018We owe it to the memory of those who lost their lives in the violence in
\nPlateau, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Zamfara and elsewhere since 1999 to
\nbring the conflicts to a decisive end. I assure you that we will do this.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Let me make it clear that even a single life lost in any part of the
\ncountry is one too many. I came to office vowing to ensure the protection
\nof lives and property, and I remain committed to this despite the
\nchallenges we have experienced,\u2019\u2019 President Buhari said.<\/p>\n

He also used the occasion of the visit by CAN Northern leaders to
\nenumerate some steps taken by his administration to check the recurring
\nviolence in some parts of the country.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018In recent weeks, we have beefed up Operation Safe Haven in Plateau
\nState, with the deployment of extra Special Forces from the Defence
\nHeadquarters.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Besides, we currently have no fewer than three special military
\nintervention forces in the troubled zones.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Operation Safe Haven to secure Plateau State, Operation Whirl Stroke 1
\n(OPWS) to secure Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa and OPWS 2 to secure Zamfara
\nand Kaduna States.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018These forces are supported with investigative and intelligence gathering
\ncapabilities from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services
\nand other agencies,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Acknowledging that it is the full responsibility of government to deploy
\nlaw enforcement agencies in troubled spots, the President noted that
\ncreating the platform and mechanisms for dialogue remained a collective
\neffort for all citizens.<\/p>\n

He told the Christian leaders that the military and police have arrested
\nhundreds of suspects across the various flash-points in the region and
\nseveral prosecutions are going on, noting that there have been a number of
\nconvictions.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Nigerians are right when they say they want to see more convictions and
\nI would like to appeal to the judiciary to help us fast track these
\ncases,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

President Buhari also condemned insinuations that his government has done
\nnothing about the recent killings.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018When some, for clearly political purposes, attempt to suggest that this
\ngovernment is doing nothing about the killings and that I, being Fulani,
\nmust be encouraging these satanic acts, it seems to me that there is no
\nlimit to the evil in the minds of men.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Otherwise, how can anyone in their right minds suggest that I, as an
\nelected President even with substantial votes in the affected areas, will
\nfor any reason do harm by an act of omission to those same people?<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Secondly, the problems in all these areas, as you all know, are
\nhistorical. There is no administration that has not had to contend with
\nkillings in these same areas over the years.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Indeed, in 2001, you may recall that after thousands were killed in
\nPlateau State, a State of Emergency was declared and a Governor was
\nreplaced by an Administrator,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Earlier in his remarks, the leader of the delegation, Dr Pam had
\nenumerated some demands from the Christian community in Northern Nigeria,
\nincluding an urgent review of the nation\u2019s security architecture;
\nrebuilding of communities ravaged by the attacks and provision of adequate
\nsecurity for farmers in the region.<\/p>\n

The cleric, among others, also challenged the Federal government to
\nencourage herders to acquire land for ranching across the country as a
\nmeans of private business investment.<\/p>\n
