{"id":63207,"date":"2018-07-25T19:53:57","date_gmt":"2018-07-25T18:53:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=63207"},"modified":"2018-07-25T19:53:57","modified_gmt":"2018-07-25T18:53:57","slug":"police-arraign-melaye-for-attempted-suicide-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/police-arraign-melaye-for-attempted-suicide-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Police Arraign Melaye For Attempted Suicide"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West at the National Assembly, has<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">been arraigned before an Abuja High Court in Apo for attempted suicide,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">attempt to escape from lawful custody and damage of police property.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The lawmaker was arraigned on Wednesday, barely 24 hours after he defected<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Party (PDP).<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Dino pleaded not guilty to the six-count charge preferred against him, and<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">was subsequently granted bail in sum of N5 million and two sureties in<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">like sum.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Justice Silvanus Orji, the presiding judge, also ordered that the sureties<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">must be directors in the Civil Service and be residents of the Abuja.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The prosecuting counsel, Alex Izinyon, had told the court that the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">defendant committed the alleged offences on April 24.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">He said the defendant, while being conveyed in a police vehicle to Lokoja,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">forced his way out and escaped.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Mr Izinyon further said that the defendant sat on the ground, holding a<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">substance in one hand threatening to drink it to kill himself so that he<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">can put the police officers in trouble.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The prosecutor also said that the defendant broke the glass of the vehicle<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">with his elbow and caused damage to police property.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">He said the offences contravened the provisions of Sections<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">148,153,173,231, 326 and 327 of the Penal Code.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The counsel to Mr Melaye, Mike Ozekhome, prayed the court to allow the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">bail granted to the defendant at the Magistrates\u2019 Court Wuse on the same<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">charges to continue.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The prosecution opposed the application, adding that bail is at the<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">discretion of the court.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The judge upheld the submission of the prosecution and gave the new bail<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">conditions.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">He said that the case would be assigned to another judge by the chief<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">judge after the vacation.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Dino Melaye has been in a running battle with the Nigeria Police Force.
