A presidential aspirant of the Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), Mr. Gbenga
\nOlawepo-Hashim said weekend that the 2019 presidential election would be a
\nthree-party race, declaring that the ANN would offer a credible
\nalternative platform to Nigerians who desire real change and national
\nrevival.<\/p>\n
Olawepo-Hashim said at the national convention of the ANN in Abuja that
\nthe ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and the major opposition Peoples
\nDemocratic Party, PDP, had both failed to justify the peoples\u2019 confidence
\nin them.<\/p>\n
He said as flawed and compromised platforms, the APC and the PDP would not
\nsail through in 2019, as they would suffer outright rejection by Nigerians
\nwho have become disillusioned by their failure to provide leadership
\nrequired to transform Nigeria.<\/p>\n
According to him, \u201cthe national economy has been grossly mismanaged by the
\nAPC government.\u00a0 We are almost in a disaster on the economy. When
\nPresident Goodluck Jonathan left, unemployment rate was 6.4 percent, but
\nunder President Muhammadu Buhari, it is now 600 percent increase.\u201d<\/p>\n
Olawepo-Hashim, a successful international businessman and chairman of
\nOilworld Limited, said both the APC and the PDP were in disarray and up
\nfor a crushing defeat in the 2019 general election.<\/p>\n
He stated, in particular, that President Buhari must be changed and the
\npeople must be deliberate in investing their mandate in another leadership
\non the basis of capacity and vision and not on the basis of \u201canybody in
\n2019 but Buhari\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe mistake of 2015 must not be repeated when some people said anybody
\nbut President Goodluck Jonathan would be president.\u00a0 So, it must not just
\nbe anybody but President Buhari in 2019, because anybody can as well be
\nworse than Buhari,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n
Olawepo-Hashim, who was first elected into the position of deputy national
\npublicity secretary of the PDP in 1999, called on Nigerians to rest
\nassured that the ANN would offer a credible and solid platform for
\nnational revival, and declared that he would contest for the position of
\npresident on the ANN platform in the 2019 election.<\/p>\n
The former student union leader said he had a divine command to offer
\nhimself on the platform of a credible third party on which he intended to
\ncollaborate with Nigerians, most especially the young and the not-too-old
\nof both sexes, in order to take Nigeria to higher heights.<\/p>\n
He said the ANN was not a part of the coalition of political parties
\nthrough which many questionable politicians had sneaked into politics,
\nstressing that the decision was informed by the need to be able to
\nconvince Nigerians that \u201cit is not politics for the sake of it and neither
\nis it business as usual.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to him, \u201cIt is a serious and national movement of renewal. I
\nwill be a rallying point for the national rebirth.\u00a0 There are values that
\nmust guide our leaders.\u00a0 We are people of integrity.\u00a0 Mindless looting is
\nnot who we are.\u00a0 We are decent people and our leaders should be able to
\nchampion our positive values.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are leaders who talk down on the country, that Nigeria is corrupt
\nand they think they can increase their political value by debasing and
\ndemeaning the country and talking down on their people.\u00a0 That is not the
\nbusiness of leadership.\u00a0 The business of leadership is to inspire change
\nwith the greatest value and propel them on the path of national
\nreconstruction.\u201d<\/p>\n
He canvassed \u201ca change in the context in which politics is being played in
\nthe country so that we can have a sane conversation on the way forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
