The National Security Council meeting began on Thursday with the general<\/div>\n
\n
overview of the security situation in the country, as it relates to the
\nconduct of the forthcoming 2019 general elections.<\/p>\n

Minister of Defence, Brigadier General Mansur Dan-Ali (rtd), revealed this
\nin a statement shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari presided over the
\nmeeting at the Presidential Villa.<\/p>\n

He said it recommended the deployment of security agencies to the states,
\nto enable the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conduct the
\nelections peacefully.<\/p>\n

Mr Dan-Ali was hopeful that the deployment of security personnel would
\nfurther douse the tension created by the outcome of the political parties\u2019
\nprimaries and \u201csome desperate persons\u201d to sabotage the electoral process.<\/p>\n

According to him, the meeting also addressed an attempt to put pressure on
\nthe electoral body by some notable personalities through demonstrations.<\/p>\n

He, however, said the situation was brought under control by combined
\nefforts of security agencies to avoid the process being hijacked by
\nhoodlums or armed bandits.<\/p>\n

The minister pointed out that another area of security concern discussed
\nat the meeting was post-election violence, to prevent \u201cdesperate
\npoliticians\u201d from whipping up ethno-religious sentiments to create a
\nsecurity situation in the country.<\/p>\n

He said the Council discussed the proliferation and stockpiling of weapons
\nby some disgruntled elements with a desire to take laws into their hands
\nat the slightest opportunity.<\/p>\n

The Council also called for the concerted effort of all security agencies
\nto ensure that the 2019 general elections were hitch free.<\/p>\n

Similarly, it stressed the need for continuous sensitisation of the public
\nby the National Orientation Agency (NOA).<\/p>\n

The Council further called for regular meetings of relevant stakeholders
\nincluding INEC, as well as international and local election observers and
\nthe media ahead of the polls.<\/p>\n

Although the Chief of Defence Staff was absent, the Chiefs of Army, Navy
\nand Air Force, as well as the Inspector General of Police attended the
\nmeeting.<\/p>\n

Also in attendance are the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Abba Kyari;
\nSecretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Mr Boss Mustapha; and
\nthe National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
