The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety
\nAgency (NIMASA) Dr. Dakuku Peterside has urged players in the maritime
\nsector especially enforcement officers to comply with safety rules that
\nwould eliminate marine accidents and other related issues that may arise
\nfrom marine operational mishandling.<\/p>\n
The DG made this known at the opening of the Annual Maritime
\nAdministration and Safety Enforcement (MASE) HSE Workshop with the theme:
\nMaritime Enforcement Safety: Current Global Benchmarks organised by the
\nAgency in conjunction with Heritage Bank which held in Lagos.<\/p>\n
According to him \u201c I am happy that we are focusing on Health Safety and
\nEnvironment most importantly the safety of those who enforce rules and
\nregulations.\u00a0 As a safety administration we are not going to be held by
\nlocal standards because operational safety especially when it comes to the
\nmaritime sector has to conform to global standards and this is what we are
\npreaching in NIMASA\u201d<\/p>\n
Speaking further Dr. Dakuku said that as part of the Agency\u2019s mandate to
\nensure safety and security of vessels visiting and leaving the nation\u2019s
\nterritorial waters, it is also the responsibility of the Agency to ensure
\nthe safety of those who work on board vessels and offshore platforms as
\nwell as those who create support services from the shore to for maritime
\nactivities thrive.<\/p>\n
In his words, \u201cOur goal is to see a maritime sector devoid of avoidable
\naccidents due to lack of professional enforcement. This is why we have
\nreviewed our enforcement drive to give proper attention to Health Safety
\nand Environmental guidelines for the benefit of everyone participating in
\nthe sector\u201d<\/p>\n
He charged enforcement officers to be safety conscious whenever they are
\ncarrying out their routine inspections adding that they must ensure that
\ninspections and enforcement are done in such a manner that no life is put
\nat risk.<\/p>\n
Dr. Dakuku further stated that the training will provide hands-on safety
\nprocedures, which aid the maritime enforcement team carry out their
\nresponsibilities under the NIMASA Act 2007 and related instruments with
\ncompliance with HSE regulations, solely for identification, assessment and
\ncontrol of hazards prone to enforcement operations in onshore and offshore
\nfacilities.<\/p>\n
In his remarks the Head of Health Safety and Environment Unit of NIMASA,
\nEngr. Fred Ugo said that the Agency through the HSE Unit has set out basic
\nguidelines of officers responsible for ensuring health and safety in
\nmaritime especially as it conforms to the environmental standards which
\nare achievable during enforcement operations.<\/p>\n
It is important to note that Maritime Administration and Safety
\nEnforcement\u00a0 HSE Workshop is an annual event which brings maritime
\nenforcement officers up to speed\u00a0 with the latest details in risk
\nassessment. The event is also designed to boost hazard awareness in
