The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that the<\/div>\n
process for extraditing former Minister of Petroleum, Deziani<\/div>\n
Alison-Madueke, from the United Kingdom has begun.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The acting spokesman of the commission, Tony Orilade, disclosed this in an<\/div>\n
interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
There have been calls from different quarters for the extradition of the<\/div>\n
former minister over several allegations of impropriety against her.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to Mr Orilade, EFCC\u2019s Operations Department has made<\/div>\n
presentation to the Legal Department to commence the process, and that<\/div>\n
process has commenced.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He, however, said that the action had to be processed through the office<\/div>\n
of the Attorney-General of the Federation, explaining that it was not<\/div>\n
something the commission would commence and conclude on its own.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cIt is ongoing. Within the next few weeks, the extent to which we have<\/div>\n
gone will be made known to the public.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cIt is not a fresh case; it is not a fresh petition that is just being<\/div>\n
looked into; the whole process is a total package.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThis extradition is just an aspect of Deziani\u2019s investigation and<\/div>\n
commencement of trial,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In 2017, a Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the final forfeiture of<\/div>\n
N7.6 billion alleged loot recovered from the former minister to the<\/div>\n
federal government.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Justice Abdulazeez Anka granted an application by the EFCC seeking the<\/div>\n
final forfeiture of the money to the government.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Granting the application, the judge had said: \u201cI have read the motion on<\/div>\n
notice seeking the final forfeiture of the sum of N7.6 billion reasonably<\/div>\n
suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activity.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI have also gone through the affidavit in support of the application.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cIn the circumstances, I am of the view that the application has merit and<\/div>\n
is hereby granted as prayed. Parties have a right of appeal.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In October, 2017, the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the<\/div>\n
Federation, Abubakar Malami, had said that Nigeria had no immediate plan<\/div>\n
to bring Mrs Allison-Madueke back home to face trial.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mrs Allison-Madueke, who is being investigated in the UK, had urged the<\/div>\n
federal government to bring her back to the country to face corruption<\/div>\n
charges against her.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
But, Mr Malami said that bringing her back to the country would jeopardise<\/div>\n
the investigation being carried on her in the UK.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cSteps have been taken by the United Kingdom authorities on issues<\/div>\n
bothering on corrupt practices involving Nigerians.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cIf Nigeria feels strongly that there is need to bring Mrs Diezani<\/div>\n
Allison-Madueke here to face charges of corruption, government will not<\/div>\n
hesitate to do that.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cAs things stand now, there is no need for that since the UK Government is<\/div>\n
already investigating her,\u2019\u2019 he had said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The EFCC spokesman could not, however, say the point at which it became<\/div>\n
necessary to seek extradition of the former minister. (NAN)<\/div>\n
