Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s
\nre-election will bring a \u201csuffering much worse\u201d than what Nigerians go go
\nthrough.<\/p>\n
He also denied reports that he would stay neutral ahead of the 2019
\nelections, saying \u201conly a fool will sit on the fence\u201d.<\/p>\n
The former president said this while reacting to a report that he has
\nwithdrawn support for Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the
\nPeoples Democratic Party (PDP).<\/p>\n
In a statement issued Sunday on his behalf, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo\u2019s
\nspokesman, said the former president had only urged Nigerians to vote for
\ncredible candidate in the 2019 presidential poll.<\/p>\n
The statement read: \u201cWhile Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is in Cairo to attend
\nthe maiden edition of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF), of which he is
\nChairman of the Advisory Council, his attention has been drawn to a report
\nby the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) with the headline \u201cAtiku: Obasanjo
\nShifts Political Gear to Neutral.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is disingenuous, if not malicious, for anyone to suggest that Chief
\nObasanjo was being neutral when he chose not to use the Owu Convention as
\na platform for political campaign but instead adopt a communal and
\nfamilial approach in talking to members of his Owu family.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor the records, and as accurately reported by some media organisations,
\nwhat the former president said at the convention in Iwo was that while he
\nwould not impress any candidates on them, Nigerians should vote for
\ncredible candidates who will drive growth and development and make their
\nlives better than it is now.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnly a fool will sit on the fence or be neutral when his or her country
\nis being destroyed with incompetence, corruption, lack of focus,
\ninsecurity, nepotism, brazen impunity and denial of the obvious. Chief
\nObasanjo is no such fool nor is he so unwise.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said Nigerians must get involved in voting process and that \u201cthey must
\nknow that beneficial change will not come if they remain inactive just
\ncomplaining and complacent and they allow themselves to be deceived by
\nsycophants and enemies of Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf they do not become active and get much needed change of the current
\nadministration to a government that will improve the economy, regain the
\nconfidence of investors and generally drive growth, development and
\neconomic progress with security, what is coming will be much worse than
\nwhat Nigerians currently suffer,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n
