The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO)has expressed displeasure over
\nrecent comments by the National Democratic Institute (NDI)and the
\nInternational Republican Institute (IRI) over the recent suspension of
\nthe Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen. The two United States
\nof America based organisations had, in their statements, queried the
\ndecision of the Nigerian President to suspend the Chief Justice.<\/p>\n
They had also suggested that the federal government ought to have
\nconsulted other political actors in the decision to suspend the CJN.<\/p>\n
BMO however believes this is undue interference in a strictly Nigerian
\naffair. In a statement signed by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and
\nSecretary Cassidy Madueke, the group said the two organisations are
\nwrong on several counts.<\/p>\n
\u201cFirst, it is important to educate the NDI and IRI that Nigeria is a
\ncountry governed by laws, and not subject to the dictates of some
\nnon-governmental organisations from America. On the issue of the
\nsuspension of the CJN, the president followed the laws of the land and
\nthe courts are available for any aggrieved person to seek redress.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt should also be emphasized that the suspension has nothing to do
\nwith the upcoming elections, and therefore does not call for the
\ninvolvement of political actors. Let it be known that once a
\ngovernment is in place it has a duty to discharge its responsibilities
\nto the people, more so when the decision is not hinged on politics\u201d.<\/p>\n
BMO says it finds it \u201cunbelievable that the two institutes will impute
\nthat a decision that was taken by a sovereign state in the course of
\nnormal governance is targeted at the forthcoming election. This is
\nunacceptable, reprehensible and must stop.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor the umpteenth time, we want to let the NDI and IRI know that the
\ndecision of the President to suspend the CJN was based on the Code of
\nConduct Tribunal order and not meant to \u2018unfairly impact the electoral
\nprocesses\u2019 as claimed in the organisations\u2019 report.<\/p>\n
