President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday in Lagos said his administration\u2019s<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

economic policies are making the desired impact, evidenced by steady
\ngrowth in the economy in the last three years.Speaking at a town hall meeting with the Business community in Lagos,
\nPresident Buhari said he had kept his promise to boost the economy,
\nthrough blocking leakages in government finances, increasing capital
\nexpenditure and inflows, and implementing the Economic Recovery and Growth
\nPlan (ERGP), among others.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018I firmly believe that our economic policies are beginning to make the
\ndesired impact.\u00a0 Economic growth has resumed and is continuing to improve.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Growth was higher in 2017 than in 2016, data even from external sources
\nshows that it will be higher in 2018 than in 2017.\u00a0 I am confident that as
\nwe stay the course, it will be better still at the end of 2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Inflation is coming down steadily, there is stability in the exchange
\nrate and foreign exchange is readily available for genuine business.
\nForeign reserves are adequate and growing; capital inflows have increased
\nand the trade balance is positive.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018We are paying off debts that were not even publicly acknowledged before
\nnow, including those owed to States, the electricity sector, oil
\nmarketers, exporters, backlog of salaries of workers and pensioners,
\namongst others,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

The President who met with representatives of Manufacturers Association of
\nNigeria (MAN), Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry and\u00a0 Nigeria
\nAssociation of Small and Medium Enterprises shortly before attending the
\nAPC presidential campaign rally in Lagos, said he is a strong believer in
\nthe importance of investing in infrastructure to promote development.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018I am happy that the results of the priority we have placed on this
\nsector are beginning to show.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Our commitment is reflected in the resources that we are providing for
\ninfrastructure.\u00a0 In 2016 and 2017, capital expenditure was up to N2.7
\ntrillion while over N800m has been released under the current budget.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018This has been complemented by the inception of the $650 million
\nPresidential Infrastructure Development Fund which will focus initially on
\nthe Lagos-Ibadan expressway, the Second Niger Bridge, the Abuja-Kano
\nexpressway and the Mambilla hydropower plant,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

The President also highlighted completed and ongoing projects in the
\ntransport and aviation sector, expressing delight that the rail projects
\nare generating excitement across the country because it would help local
\nbusinesses to grow.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018The Abuja-Kaduna railway is up and running.\u00a0 The Itakpe-Warri line is
\nbeing test-run before going commercial.\u00a0 The completed portion of the
\nAbuja light rail project is facilitating movement to the airport.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018The Lagos-Ibadan railway is nearing completion with people already
\ntaking test rides on the completed portions. We are determined to work at
\nthe same pace on the Coastal Railway Line and the line from Port Harcourt
\nto Maiduguri.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018We completed the repairs to the runway in Abuja in record time, and just
\na few weeks ago, I commissioned the Baro Inland Port. All these
\nachievements will help Nigerian businesses to grow,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

On future plans to sustain the positive economic outlook, the President
\nsaid the Federal Government would raise more revenue to boost the economic
\nfundamentals and increase the level and quality of government services in
\nsupport of the private sector.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018I recently inaugurated a Technical Advisory Committee to identify new
\nsources of revenue in this regard.\u00a0 \u00a0This is also to ensure that
\nGovernment at all levels have the resources to pay the new national wage,
\nwhich we are indeed committed to paying.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Our economic fundamentals are strong and, in the next four years by the
\ngrace of God, we are determined to stay the course in terms of
\npartnerships with the private sector; support to the real sector; helping
\nsmall businesses, providing infrastructure and an enabling business
\nenvironment,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

The President told members of the private sector that his administration
\nhas also stimulated growth in the economy by adopting and implementing new
\nstrategies to deal with the security situation in the country and tackle
\nrampant corruption.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018When this Government came into office, our three priorities were to
\nincrease the level of security across the country, tackle rampant
\ncorruption and improve the economy. These three factors are
\ninterconnected.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Without peace and stability, there will never be economic growth and
\ndevelopment.”<\/p>\n

The administration\u2019s view on improving the economy, the President said,
\nfocused on a bottom to top approach.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018We focused on developing the rural economy which we hope will result in
\ngrowth that is inclusive. Boko Haram and the militants in the Niger Delta
\nstarted their aggressive operations during the years of high oil prices
\nand GDP growth.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018These young and misguided youths did not benefit from the various
\nstatistics and indicators of prosperity we were celebrating in the past
\ndecade. No wonder they were recruited to cause violence and mayhem in
\ntheir localities.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018These three priorities, if addressed, will completely transform Nigeria
\nto a diversified, inclusive and competitive economy. But this is not an
\novernight transition. We are not only transforming systems and processes,
\nbut we are also changing hearts and minds.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018We have recaptured and held lost territories. Yes, we still have pockets
\nof insurgency, but our sovereign integrity is intact,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
