Former United States of America\u2019s (USA) President Bill Clinton will not be
\nin Abuja on Wednesday for the second National Peace Accord signing ahead
\nof the general elections.<\/p>\n
Clinton, according to the Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar led Peace Accord
\ncommittee was expected to deliver a keynote address at the event slated
\nfor the International Conference Centre (ICC) Abuja.<\/p>\n
Clinton, the committee said, was expected to hold meetings with President
\nMuhammadu Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar aimed at nipping
\nthreats of unrest in the bud.<\/p>\n
But a statement by Clinton\u2019s spokesman Angel Ure\u00f1a regretted the former
\nPresident\u2019s visit might be politicised in a way that is not in line with
\nthe goals of the committee.<\/p>\n
The statement said: \u201cPresident Clinton appreciates General Abdulsalami
\nAbubakar and the Nigerian National Peace Committee\u2019s invitation to travel
\nto Nigeria.
\n\u201cHe is incredibly supportive and respectful of the committee\u2019s efforts, of
\nthe election process, and of the work being done to try to ensure a
\npeaceful, free, fair, and transparent outcome.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a crucial time in Nigeria, and President Clinton is hopeful that
\nthe election\u2019s outcome reflects the will of the Nigerian people.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the course of the last several days, and after various conversations
\nwith the different stakeholders, it\u2019s become apparent that President
\nClinton\u2019s visit to Nigeria has the potential to be politicized in a way
\nthat is not in line with the goals of the committee. Therefore, he will
\nnot be traveling to Abuja.<\/p>\n
