\nThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cautions the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.
\nGen. Tukur Buratai, to refrain himself from acts or actions that will
\nsuggest in any way that the military has become an arm of a political
\nparty.<\/p>\n

According to a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, “The PDP says Gen.
\nBuratai\u2019s allusion to the people\u2019s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, as well as
\nhis threats to officers and ranks to execute the unlawful order by
\nPresident Muhammadu Buhari to participate in the electoral process is an
\naberration of our laws and a recipe for crisis.<\/p>\n

“The PDP states that Atiku Abubakar spoke on the side of the law and
\nwishes of Nigerians and cannot be intimidated by any body no matter how
\nhighly placed.<\/p>\n

“Gen. Buratai is counseled to note that the loyalty of the military is to
\nthe state and that the President lacks the powers, under our laws, to
\ndeploy soldiers for the conduct of elections.<\/p>\n

“Our party urges Gen Buratai to concentrate on his very demanding
\nassignment of protecting the territorial integrity of our nation and
\nending insurgency rather than dabbling into partisan politics at the
\nrisk of our national cohesion.<\/p>\n

“It is imperative to state that by trying to drag the military to
\nparticipate in the February 23 Presidential elections, President Buhari
\nplots to suspend our constitution, assume the position of an emperor,
\ntrigger unrest, subvert our electoral process and derail our democracy.<\/p>\n

“The party directs President Buhari to the judgment of the Federal High
\nCourt, Lagos on March 23, 2015, wherein the court, presided over by
\nJustice Ibrahim Buba, directly outlawed the deployment of troops in the
\nconduct of elections in our country.<\/p>\n

“President Buhari should also avail himself of the subsisting judgment of
\nthe Court of Appeal, which on February 15, 2015, held that the President
\nhas no powers to deploy soldiers in the conduct of elections.<\/p>\n

“The PDP further counsels President Buhari and Gen. Buratai to end their
\nrationalizing of military option, as the courts have summarily dismissed
\ntheir arguments that soldiers are needed to guarantee peaceful
\nelections.<\/p>\n

“It may interest President Buhari to know that the judgment was sequel to
\na suit filed by the APC Leader in the House of Representatives, Femi
\nGbajabiamila, seeking a declaration that deployment of soldiers during
\nelections is illegal and unconstitutional.<\/p>\n

“In case, President Buhari is not aware, as usual, the court directly
\nheld that \u201cthe Armed Forces have no role in elections\u201d and if soldiers
\nmust vote, they must do so in their barracks.<\/p>\n

“According to the court, \u201cthe time has come for us to establish the
\nculture of democratic rule in the country and to start to do the right
\nthing particularly when it has to do with dealing with the electoral
\nprocess, which is one of the pillars of democracy.
\n\u201cIn spite of the behaviour of the political class, we should by all
\nmeans try to keep armed personnel and military from being a part and
\nparcel of the electoral process.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe state is obligated to confine the military to their very demanding
\nassignment, especially in this time of insurgencies by keeping them out
\nof elections\u201d, the court held.<\/p>\n

“The priming of the military ahead of the election, therefore, heightens
\nthe fear of plots by the APC to plunge our nation into crisis and use
\nsecurity forces to subjugate Nigerians, seeing that President Buhari has
\nno chance of winning the February 23 Presidential Election.<\/p>\n

“The PDP therefore cautions President Buhari not to allow his desperation
\nto push him to corrupt the patriotism of our military and use them against
\ninnocent Nigerians, whose only demand is for a free, fair and credible
\nelection.<\/p>\n

“We urge the international community to note the roles being played by
\nPresident Buhari, his Federal Executive Council and Gen. Buratai in our
\nelectoral process.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
